System Freezes After KDE Plasma 6.3 Update

Hello. After updating KDE Plasma to version 6.3, my system started freezing. I have identified that this happens over time if I frequently minimize and restore windows (window effect settings are at their default values).

At some point, the image on all monitors freezes, the keyboard remains lit but becomes unresponsive, yet audio continues playing in the background (e.g., if I was watching YouTube). Additionally, I can still hear system sounds, such as USB device connections and disconnections.

On an X11 session, the issue persists, but I can still move the cursor, while everything else remains frozen.

journalctl does not show any errors. I tried checking old logs and also monitored journalctl -f on a second monitor while reproducing the issue, but found nothing useful.

If any additional information or logs are needed, please let me know, and I’ll provide them.

I think it’s just an upstream Plasma bug, but just to make sure can you try using Arch’s package? Our kwin package is patched so precautions must be made

sudo pacman -S extra/kwin

Now the system doesn’t freeze within the first 10 minutes if I start actively moving windows. I’ll work in the system for a couple more days and let you know if something goes wrong. But it seems like this really solved the problem.
I wanted to clarify whether I should continue downloading kwin from extra in the future or just wait for the next kwin update in the CachyOS repository?

Wait for an update from us? As a sidenote, which version of kwin did you have from our repos? Was it -4? Check you /var/log/pacman.log if you’re not sure.

kwin 6.3.0-4 from cachyos-v3

My system has also locked up twice since the update. I was also on kwin 6.3.0-4 from cachyos-v3 when this occurred. I just updated to -5 a few minutes ago, hoping for a fix.

kwin 6.3.0-5 from cachyos-v3 does not fix the problem. I’ve been freezing when I’m trying to move a window by dragging the title bar.

Edit 2: Upon further testing, the window doesn’t have to be maximized. Just drag any window up and down from the top. May have to do it a few times before the system freezes.

Edit: I found that I can reproduce the lockup as follows:

  1. Vertically maximize a window
  2. Drag it down from the top
  3. Drag it back up to the top

FYI, in case it matters, I had another vertically maximized window in the background.

I’ve just installed kwin 6.3.0-3 from the extra repo per the post above from @Naim and performed a few tests. So far no lockups.

I think this is not an issue by KDE 6.3 - but more an issue with “cachyos-kde-settings”. Today I got an update and it’s works back now. No other changes.

Version 4.7-1 is needed.

I don’t think so. I updated earlier today and have cachyos-kde-settings 4.7-1, but the system still froze while using kwin 6.3.0-5 from cachyos-v3. After installing kwin 6.3.0-3 from the extra repo my system hasn’t frozen yet. I’m still using the cachyos-kde-settings 4.7-1.

Nginx Directory Please try this package before I push the changes to master. Thanks.

Thanks, I just tried it. Unfortunately, the system still locks up. I’m going to reinstall from the extra repo unless you need me to send some info from this install first.

It’s fine, I think this is from a different patch. Let me do some more digging.

I uploaded -7 build in the same link. Please try.

The system still locks up with -7.

-8 pushed, please try.

Unfortunately -8 still locks up.

What… Are you using an ICC profile or so?

I had tried an ICC profile, but I switched back to Built-in. I’m running 144Hz, Automatic Adaptive sync, 150% scale, and prefer efficiency settings. Using Nvidia open driver on a 2070 Super.

Can you try setting it to None?

OK, I’ll have to reinstall -8 unless you want me to try another?
