Im attempting to get away from Micro$oft and Windows by switching over to CachyOS. I’ve downloaded and installed CachyOS desktop edition from the ISO onto a VM. When CachyOS boots up for the 1st time, I am presented with a login prompt for “liveuser” . What is the default password? leaving the password field blank and clicking enter on the keyboard doesnt work. The password “fish” doesnt work. The password “liveuser” doesnt work. The password “cachyos” doesnt work. The password “CachyOS” doesnt work. Please advise as this default password is not listed anywhere in the cachyos faq, on the download page or anywhere on the internet for that matter.
Ran into the same exact issue. Freshly downloaded ISO & set up into a bootable usb with Rufus.
Fixed it by choosing nvidia open drivers option in the grub menu. The default CachyOS option prompted to the same screen as the OP.
The password is live
There shouldn’t be any password, can you login while leaving that field blank?
leaving the field blank does not work. The password “live” does not work. Selecting either the default cachyos option or the nvidia open drivers option does not work in the grub menu. Entering the user root with a blank password does not work either in this overlay screen. I am able to get to a command line interface by clicking ctrl + alt + f2 and am able to login in as root with a blank password. I am using Windows 10 hyper-v and created a VM for CachyOS. I have successfully created an Ubuntu VM with no issues with windows 10 and hyper-v. Is CachyOS compatible with running on a VM? If so, is it possible that there is something “off” with the latest .iso file? The issue appears to be related to this “overlay” screen that the initial cachyOS setup is defaulting to before fully loading. I watched a dozen or so youtube videos on people setting up CachyOS. None of them had this liveuser overlay screen before getting to the actual CachyOS config screen where you setup a username/password etc…
Hey man, ran into this exact same issue, seem to have gotten past it just by switching to Wayland in the bottom left of the login interface, then clicking login with no password entered. After this booted to the normal installer, hope this helps!
Hi Mike,
I run into the same problem.
The only solution was recommended by Grom
Click on Desktop Session, bottom left and change to Wayland. Click on login, no need for password, just leave it empty. Wait a few minutes until you see Cachyos Hello. Click on Installation then on launch installer. You need 3 Gb cache minimum. You are all set
Exactly! That worked for me.
Same to me - a no go for a idstro - CachyOS is out. No thanks for wasting my time!
If it was ‘the same’ for you .. then that means all you needed to do was change the session in the lower left corner.
( This oddity seems to only be observed under virtual machines. )
If you are not using cachy, and do not intend to, would not this post be even more of a waste for even more people?
Had the exact same issue as OP, but switching to Wayland let me log in. Thanks!
I’m not sure why the Live CD doesn’t default to Wayland if it can’t even log in through X11; I found this thread when I tried to search up the default liveuser password, under the impression that my inability to log in was simply a matter of entering the wrong password.
As suggested by @Grom, switching to Wayland and leaving password empty worked. I will switch back to X11 later if necessary.
Helped me today with fresh iso on live CD, thanks!
On Live User login screen in the bottom left and change to Plasma/Wayland. Click on login, no need for password, just leave it empty. (Courtesy : Reddit forum user “xiaomeixw”)
this worked thank you!!
same here. how is this still a problem after 6 months? you literally cannot install the OS without googling first how to get past the login-screen.
We also don’t have any use for dead accounts (Karteileichen).

root and password “live”
Incorrect.
There is no password.
Any problems signing in are only observed under virtual machines (for which the use of cachy is pointless) .. and even then you simply need select a different session. As has been written here multiple times.
No, it’s not pointless. I’m trying CauchyOS to see if it’s a candidate to replace my LMDE and also to get to know CauchyOS. It would make no sense to install CauchyOS over LMDE, disrupting all my stable environment, just to go back to LMDE again. And I’ve tried hundreds, yes hundreds, of GNU/Linux installations, I know what I’m saying.
Instead of hatred people should try understanding.
