Proposal for better gaming OS

Introduction:
I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this, so if it isn’t, please feel free to move it to the correct section.

The Proposal:
I propose that we collaborate with experts who understand the connection between CachyOS and specific games to create a setup wizard. This wizard would handle downloading, installing, and optimizing CachyOS for a particular game with just a few clicks—no complex configuration required. It could be hosted in the AUR or as part of the gaming packages.

Why it is necessary and how it will benefit the OS:
Many people install CachyOS+LXQt specifically for gaming, but not everyone is fully ready for Linux yet just like me (not to mention that there is even a lot of anecdotal information). Making this process as fast, smooth, pleasant, and safe as possible will attract more users to the OS. Most importantly, it will encourage them to keep using it long-term.

The First Initiative:
I don’t have the technical knowledge to build this myself, but I want to take the first step by sharing the idea and proposing the first game, hoping developers can bring this project to life. Right now, I am struggling with Arma 3. Aside from having a brand-new OS with a beautiful appearance, great control over everything, and excellent privacy, I haven’t yet seen the performance benefits that would justify switching from Windows to CachyOS. I have already applied all the settings shown in the attached picture.

In the name of the better OS

I realy don’t see the point. I mean, install Steam, download Arma 3 and play it (You can force to use the steam stable proton version if needed). Works out of the box for me like any other game which I have tried out so far.

But aside from your propsal, you could tell us or describe what your problem with Arma 3 is. You could also ask for help in the Steam Arma 3 sub. That all OFC only if your copy of it is legal (Just saying).

" I haven’t yet seen the performance benefits that would justify switching from Windows to CachyOS "

So you think the points you mentioned aren’t already enough to switch to - lets say, “any” linux? Even IF (any) linux would be slightly slower (which in 90% of cases it isn’t - depending on the use case ofc), a OS that respects you, which provides better privacy, which uses way less resources and which lets you basicly do what ever you want isn’t already a good justification to use linux?

At least for for me it was enough of a justification to switch my main PC to CachyOS (WIndows 11 was NEVER an option for me even I used Windows 95/98/2k/XP/7/10 all my life) and also building and setup my first own local server which runs Debian (Sry Cachy Team  ) to host my local game serves, pihole, jellyfin, unbound and so on. So maybe it’s more or less simply a you problem not “willing” to learn a little bit (No offence!) ?

You “propose” that other people do something you’d like, but don’t fully understand.

Maybe I should clarify two things to clear up the misunderstandings:

  1. English is not my native language, so perhaps I didn’t express myself perfectly. To be absolutely clear: my only metric for switching is performance. If an OS cannot match or beat Windows performance in my specific use case, I see no justification for switching yet. Every user has different priorities.
  2. I shared this proposal with the sole intention of contributing an idea to a project I liked. I am definitely not lazy, nor am I looking to “seem cool” or wait for someone to do my work. If the community isn’t interested in the idea, that is completely fine—I have no problem staying on Windows.

I was hoping for an actual technical discussion, but most of the advice I’ve received so far online has been repetitive spam or ineffective tweaks that I’ve already tried. If nothing changes, I will simply go back to Windows.

Don’t give up on Linux and return to Spy Central because of a few unfriendly responses. I’m afraid that this is just the attitude of some experienced Linux users who have forgotten what it was like to enter Linuxworld knowing very little.

Are you suggesting that developers aren’t already ‘experts’ who try to talk to each other in the appropriate forum?

Don’t give up on Linux and return to Spy Central because of a few unfriendly responses. I’m afraid that this is just the attitude of some experienced Linux users who have forgotten what it was like to enter Linuxworld knowing very little.

I can only speak for my self but I wasn’t unfrindly or at least I think I wasn’t. I also would guess that IvanAT was unfrindly, he just asked a question and if you think about that question, you may find out what this question was driven by (Hope that sentece makes some kinda sens (English is also not my first tung).

And thinking I’m a “experienced Linux user” is a huge stretch by any imagination. I’m using linux daily since end of Oct. 2026 when I bought all the new hardware for my main rig and the server.

And btw. here is the topic from the OP which he has postet 20 days ago but never delivered any further infos to help him ( Windows to CachyOS for Arma 3 ).

So you may excuse that I think that it’s maybe the best for the OP staying on Windows if he’s not willing to deliver some infos when asked, not willing to learn on his own and just blame things not working.

And as already said, Arma 3 works very well on my system (AMD 9700x, GTX 1070, 32 GB Ram, TUF GAMING B850-PLUS WIFI). So without further infos about the OP’s problem no one can help him. Shot in the dark, maybe his “Lossless Scaling” app causes problems (Again shot in the deep dark)?

Dude, will you stop spamming this topic ?

My previous topic has nothing about this one :face_with_monocle:

( I guess the good will always remains punished ) .

Well Moonpie, I wasn’t talking to you on my 2nd post not to sure if you have relized that?

But basicly, it has something to do with it. You made that first topic complaining your Arma 3 ain’t work like you would like. Ppl tried to help, asked question but since 20 days you havent respondet there.

ANYWAY, in this topic here you complained again this idea is born because your Arma 3 not working like you would like it to work. You wrote that in your post above right?

So let`s kill your idea because why not right?

Think one moment about how many GPU’s, CPU’s, Chipsets, would been needed to test, cross tested and validated. Think about the MASSIVE amount of money needed to accomplish just to get hands on the hardware. And now think about the MASSIVE team you need to build the test setups over and over again. And last but not least think about the time it takes for that team to finish all the tests. Which brings us to the point that not even MS nor Nvidia/AMD does such things. YOu get a baseline from them and the rest is on you. But, if you have some million Euros/Dollar to spend, I’m sure that there are a couple of nerds out there with a couple of year time to spend to do it.

Btw. What if you have such app and you have more as just 1 game you play? You specifcly said “This wizard would handle downloading, installing, and optimizing CachyOS for a particular game”.

So wouldn’t the 2nd game remove the OS lvl optimization for the first game or would you need to boot into another kernel or what? Or would you launch the game over and over again using an sepperate app?

Finaly I like to point out again, that, IF your game is legal, Steam already delivers you the base line and CachyOS does the same. The rest, is on you. But up to this point you seems to prefere to complain rather than getting help for your problem because someone (me) has pointet something out in this topic which is a little bit related to your other topic (Arma 3 complains are in both).

So I will happly leave this topic and don’t “spam” (lol) it any further (Waste of time imo).

Have a nice one.

This would seem to indicate some lack of appreciation for how things are.
So we want a ‘wizard’ for downloading and installing some kind of CachyOS system?
So is the wizard intended to run on an existing CachyOS system or no?
Hosted in the AUR? So it must be linux software.
But to install a new OS? So folks would be installing Cachy, to then download and install this wizard from the AUR .. to replace their existing OS?
That does not seem like the best way to go about ‘optimizing’ Cachy.

Maybe if we back up..

So this would be designed by ‘experts’ and be tied to one specific game at a time?
So we need a Cachy and Arma expert and they would create a CachyArmaOS?
And we would do that for hundreds of games?
I am not sure I see that as being feasible even if it were somehow desirable.

I do not think OS replacement via the AUR is very reasonable.
I do not think game-specific versions of Cachy makes a lot of sense either.
To the extent Cachy needs to be optimized then that is already done or documented.. or fringe enough to not be suitable for default configuration.

My opinion after reading the things?
If you, @anon39831830, need help understanding or optimizing your Cachy system .. or getting it to work better with Arma .. then those may be topics for discussion.
But the suggestions here seem like non-starters.

hmm, i totally get where you are coming from. As rare as it is. Having to fiddle to get a game working can be annoying. But I don’t see how this is feasible for project run by community members on their spare time. Maybe im think to broad, would help if you specified exactly what you want, with specifics.

The OS isn’t actually going to benefit you in specific games. What CachyOS provides is a greater headroom for system resources and performance scheduling options that will allow your CPU to make use of its existing capabilities far better. If ARMA 3 ran poorly for you on Windows, it’s not going to suddenly run perfect OOTB on Cachy, but it will have access to more of your cores and memory.

The performance branch runs better. One good launch option is -noSplash

Here’s a guide on getting the game running at a much better framerate by disabling things like frame smoothing:

User profiles are stored in the Proton Prefix on Linux and can be accessed with Protontricks.

I will list a couple helpful wiki pages for you here that will provide some information that you can use to try and squeeze more out of ARMA 3. All of which are Linux exclusive.

You’re still going to always have better overall performance on Linux than modern Windows, even if it’s not super mega ultra giga 700 frame difference. For me it’s like 75 frames instead of 30 when there’s a big battle happening. ARMA is just shittily optimized.
