First i am interested of the idea/goal and what has been achieved with CachyOS ( im already try it on my test machine with LXQD environment and its very impresive ) because that want to change from windows to CachyOS but If don’t have any improvement in Arma 3 or get even worse performance in Arma 3 it will be too much time and effort wasted to me to reinstalling my entire perfectly tuned system so please if there is anyone more familiar/experienced in that departemnet ( Arma 3 difference between Windows and CachyOS ) write some serious answers below and if it matters my spec is :
CPU - Ryzen 5 3600
GPU - RX 6700XT
RAM - 16g. 3600Mhz.
SSD - of course
Losless Sclalling - of course
and im playing on Full HD 1080p 100hz. on 144hz. the things getting too ugly
Sooner or later I will go to CachyOS ( i see it as inevitable ) but right now it is very worrying to do it …
All I can say is you won’t have better performance. People think Linux is this perfect OS where games work much better, but don’t switch with that expectation. Best case scenario, you will play the same game with the same performance figures.
Can only speak for myself and that is arma 3 on my machine runs better ever so slightly on cachy os but keep in mind that you have a lot of variables when using arma 3 in general.
My tip is running arma 3 on ext4 filesystem as if you use ntfs you will not have a good time at all.
If you use mods like tfar you will need to do an easy workarond but noteworthy info.
BTRFS is also fine, the performance difference is in very specific scenarios most users won’t run into. 100% right with NTFS though, that should be a read-only situation to pull data off.
Games in general tend to have better 1% lows compared to Windows, but this can vary a lot as Proton can sometimes be a fickle beast by virtue of being a translation layer. Personally for some games I have slightly worse performance in some areas, but I chalk it up to Proton stuff and it isn’t a big deal; like a 5fps dip in very busy areas on FF14 for example. Oddly, Unity based games run much better for me.
If you are not comfortable changing OS then do not.
If you are comfortable doing so then you might assess your needs - which is apparently only Arma 3? - and then make your decision.
