No network/wifi driver for cachyos installation

Hello, I am new to the Linux world. The problem I have is that I changed my hardware a few days ago motherboard, CPU, memory. The board is an ASUS Strix X870e-e with the realtek 8126. When I boot from the installation stick, I have no connection to the internet because the network card is in io: loopback.
Have already downloaded the driver from realtek but don’t know how to install it. Searching the internet didn’t help me.

Thanks for the help

Hey and welcome!

You usually don’t download drivers on manufacturers’ page.

There is a package in AUR available:

$ yay -Ss 8126
aur/r8126-dkms 10.014.01-1 (+3 1.71)
    Kernel module for Realtek RTL8126

i have tried it with the yay command when i should enter it as you have described it above but i get this error.

CachyOS is Arch-based so you can read up on what an AUR is here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_User_Repository

yay is a tool to conventiently install packages provided by other users.

You are trying to use yay, which is not there. You can install yay, but you can also use the pre-installed paru. They both do the same thing, for paru you have to continue with q.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AUR_helpers

I tried it with paru but it always tries to connect to the database on the network. I think you can’t install anything on the cachyOS installation stick without rebooting which resets everything to zero. either I have to get a compatible wifi stick and do it from there or it doesn’t work at the moment.

The product page says the board has RJ45 5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

When both are not working out of the box in Linux, you drew two blanks with our purchase.

Check beforehand what has good support (read: has not bad support from manufacturer) when selecting your WiFi stick. Then install the necessary drivers for your board through it.

Some days ago there was another request for the difficulty of having a Realtek r8126:

So it works, once you have a connection and can install the driver blob.

thanks for the help, i have already found a suitable wifi stick. in the arch forum there is a small database i call it where out of the box sticks are listed

Great, keep us posted

Small update. I got the Wi-Fi stick and everything worked. Cachyos was installed Ethernet and Wi-Fi works now too.

Great news! Full success
