Is this not one of the weirdest dependency issues you've ever seen while running updates? I could use some help, please. It only happens when trying to run paru or yay, but not sudo pacman -Syu

That is the terminal output that I am getting after it finishes running $yay or $paru. It rebuilds the kernel every time I run those two commands, also. the normal pacman -Su and Cachy-Update run just fine. There are no problems with my keyrings or anything.

On the CachyOS Hello screen, it also will not let me click on the kernel manager button. I can click on everything else on the Hello menu. My pacman.conf seems to be correct and I cannot find an issue to this anywhere.

Pleae run the bug report and return the link it gives you back here.

sudo cachyos-bugreport.sh

And welcome @keifus666

Thank you for your help. Here is a log. You’ll probably just want to ignore some of the things in the report.

I have also removed pamac, as I have read it can cause some issues in the Garuda forums. I deleted Bauh earlier today also, but I have not used it in a long time.

Is this one of those?

Kernel: 6.18.13-arch1-1

I can’t help if I’m to ignore my findings. :frowning:

But as you wish, I’ll just report some oddities:

I wasn’t talking about the kernel, but I did start having issues once it tried updating the kernel about a month ago. The people on Reddit weren’t any help, so I finally decided to come here. It looks like it only does that when I run the yay command. It takes 4 hours to run the updates, then fails, because it tries rebuilding the entire system every time.

I just meant some personal documents that had my full name listed on the report.

To be honest I never even noticed that.

About the kernel though, I need to read a bit more, and if I find anything I’ll reply back.

But I sure do prefer the performant cachy kernels.

If you want to use cachy, I recommend actually using the cachy repos.

If you really want to compile the kernel from the AUR again and again, you should try with makepkg directly, rather than using an AUR helper.

Thanks. I forgot to hit q and y on the terminal.

Do you have a good recommendation on how to fix it so it will stop doing this?

Missing repos.

( and we might also guess its for the same reason - clobbered pacnew instead of properly managing it. )

I may need to include the hashes under core and extra? IDK?

No you are missing all the Cachy repos.

I do not know if you should have v3 or v4 or …

But you have no Cachy repo.

Please see the rest of that other thread for example.

Thank you so much. I hope that this works. Something messed up my repos, so I copied and pasted them from the Arch wiki after doing a live boot and copying and pasting them into the root drive from there using chmod +x or something like that. My internet is slow, so it’s going to take a while, since it’s 10 GB worth of files. Hopefully I won’t have to start over again and fstab then mount all of my drives again, then reinstall everything else.

So we have another case of ā€œOMG look the update completely does the weirdest thingsā€ that is based on a misconfigured pacman.conf. I really start to wonder why that is. Are people actively messing up their pacman.conf but forget about that? Or do tools like pamac and bauh screw the files and people are just oblivious of that?

The more of these cases I see, the less I believe in this ongoing ā€œooh uuh Arch is such an unstable systemā€-myth.

Edit: while I wrote this, @keifus666 came up with the actual solution to the puzzle:

Something messed up my repos, so I copied and pasted them from the Arch wiki after doing a live boot and copying and pasting them into the root drive from there using chmod +x or something like that.

Or something like that  glad to hear you are on the way to recovery, though. :+1:

If you remember the ā€œsomethingā€ that messed up your repos, please let us know, will you?

I never said it was unstable. I’m going to completely blame myself for using BAUH. I’m just mostly used to different distros and I’ve only been on CachyOS for about a year.

There were some bad scripts floating around that would just either delete the pacnews or just automatically overwrite the existing file with the pacnews … so could be related to something like that.
Though of course a user could just as easily do the same thing under some misunderstanding.
Bauh has problems too but thats more about forced refresh/partial-upgrade/automatically-remove-packages stuff .. not so much ā€˜pacnews’ or file overwrites that I recall.

I know and I didn’t mean that at all. It’s just that so many people say this and it really sticks around, while in the majority of cases it’s just PEBCAK :joy:

It can happen with anything, really. I really like Cachy as a daily driver and it’s been perfect for me. Sometimes you just have to fuck around and find out.

It’s all good. We learn from our mistakes. I’ll mark this as solved as soon as the repos get finished downloading and installing, hoping it’s fixed. At least you guys were nice about it. The people on Reddit were just assholes, so that discouraged me from coming into the forums and I couldn’t find what I was looking for in the Wiki.

I’ve always learned things on my own and had books/classes for Linux distros. Arch is a whole different thing, just like Fedora and Fedora Silverblue aren’t really alike.
