[Information] Experimental CachyOS Handheld Edition

Thank you for your response!
I never turn V-Sync on.
I saw a lot of video where pepople have success with the plugin on other distros and SteamDeck too. Thats why I thought maybe its a CachyOS setting problem.

Hmm. How high is your multiplier, and what is your refresh rate? I’m wondering if you have it set too high.

I tried 2x multiplier, I don’t think Legion Go is capable for more.
I use 60Hz limit in Steam settings.

Does it work if you turn that 60Hz limit off?

It seems this help. Thank you very much!

I installed CachyOS handheld edition on my Claw 8 ai+ today.
everything was fine so i started downloading games from Steam then it started freezing so i had to restart, did it about 3 times and now I boot into a black screen and I don’t know what to do.
After the CachyOS logo its just a black screen

As of the last few updates, my installs of CachyOS Handheld Edition have been running almost suspiciously perfect out of the box (including Steam Link/Remote Play) on both my Minisforum UM790 Pro and my GMKTec NucBox 12 paired with a GMKTec AD-GP1 eGPU dock (RX 7600M XT).

Honestly, CachyOS Handheld Edition is currently working better on my HTPCs unofficially than Bazzite’s officially HTPC-supported image. Huge props to the CachyOS team for whatever wizardry is happening over there.

The only issue I’ve consistently run into is that Steam Link clients appear to render at roughly half the intended viewport size before being scaled fullscreen, resulting in what can only be described as ā€œGrandma accidentally enabled Ultra Magnifier Modeā„¢ā€ with about a ~200% effective zoom. So, I found a workaround.

  • Edit:

/usr/lib/steamos/gamescope-session

  • Find:

exec gamescope \

  • Add:

-W 1920 -H 1080 \
-w 3840 -h 2160 \

Once configured, everything works beautifully and the whole setup feels stock. Gamescope renders internally at 1080p while my displays handle the upscale to 4K perfectly.

Handheld Edition finally allowed me to retire the absolutely unhinged custom Steam-as-shell Windows 11 setup I spent years engineering, maintaining, debugging, re-debugging, emergency hotfixing, and emotionally recovering from after every AMD driver update.

For the first time in forever, I’m actually spending my weekends playing games instead of arguing with Windows and deciphering cursed ancient PowerShell scrolls written by my past self at 3AM.

Hopefully the Steam Link scaling issue eventually gets fixed upstream, but for now? We ride.

Agreed. I know this version of CachyOS is not supported on Desktop, but it runs extremely well over here on my AMD build. The frame time graph is pretty much flat, whereas the other HTPC Distro I was using prior, would drop a few frames every few seconds even when idle.

I do hope CachyOS extend this build to cover desktops as well as handheld, especially now that we’re in the era of Steam Machines and console / tv gaming.

My only issue so far is a display issue which typically happens when I exit a game back to Steam; the button highlight disappears even though I can navigate (via audio cues). If I press the Steam button to bring up the main menu and then close, the button indicator re-appears and I can move around the menus again with no more display issues. This happens around 95% of the time.
