Went from Mint to cachyOS and so far the experience has been great, my issue is that I keep dragging my tabs on Firefox, the icon of Discord servers or just folders/files all the time when I don’t mean to, it feels like the ‘held click’ is too damn sensitive, is there any way to adjust it?
Another issue is that sometimes it acts as if I’m still holding the tab/file/discord server when I’m not even touching my mouse
This isn’t an issue on Mint or Windows. My mouse is a Logitech G PRO if that matters
This doesn’t make a lot of sense, the switch is either open or closed - on every desktop and every operating system… unless you have been messing about with it…
You didn’t mention if this is a fresh install, or if you tried a new USER to verify it’s not your data… indeed, you didn’t even bother telling anyone what environment/desktop you’re using, only that it’s CachyOS based.
This is a ‘fresh install’ (1 month), I don’t mess with anything I don’t understand, I use octopofi (?) to install the stuff I need (steam, Spotify, discord, vlc and Firefox) and that’s about it
I’m using KDE Plasma, idk if this is enough information
No, that doesn’t give anything better to go on why you have a weird ‘drag’ effect, I’ve not experienced this… and for reference, I started using Linux with Ubuntu (Gnome2, Hardy Heron) with my original wired HP Pavilion mouse… following that I used a couple of different brands over the years and never had any issue like this.
When mouse buttons start to feel like something’s wrong, they’re usually failing… that’s the main reason I buy new hardware - occasionally the mousewheel, sometimes one or both of the left/right buttons failed.
So next step: Try another mouse… and if you don’t have one, just buy a cheap nasty wired rodent to test with.
But having no issue on Mint or Windows also makes no sense - I can’t imagine how CachyOS could do it differently.
Just tried it, same issue, also tried on Windows and had no issues once again
It’s like the drag threshold is too low/sensitive
I’ll put this in the dumbest way possible but if I were to mouse flick like in a game on my tab, on Windows the tab itself wouldn’t even ‘shake’ as if it were being moved/dragged, where as on cachy, I’d probably drag it it out to a new instance because such a small movement already makes me drag it, does that make sense?
Also, this guy has the same issue that I have (different person, I just copied his title)
I did try turning off tab detaching on FIrefox but it’s a pain in the ass since I have multiple monitors, so was just wondering if there was something I could do
It is a little difficult for me to truly understand what you mean is happening, but it sounds like it could be a mouse acceleration issue. Can you try turning it off under mouse settings?
In case that does not work, have you tried to update the firmware just in case? I know you said it works on Windows, but just in case.
expected behavior : when the mouse is in motion during a fast click on an icon/tab it should only click the icon/tab or the icon/tab shouldn’t move enough to be dragged
observed behavior : when the mouse is in motion during a fast click on an icon/tab it currently drag icon long enough to move them to a new location and it drag tab long enough to create a new window,
the behavior is observed only on chachyos using kde. i tested on windows and it worked as described in expected behavior.
If this is the case, then it’s simply highlighting a case of differing UX philosophies between environments… Windows has a threshold for ‘drag’ events tuned to be very forgiving, so you can be very sloppy.
Plasma is more accurate. If a mouse pointer is moving, then it is absolutely a drag… For us, the threshold is also hardcoded in QStyle::PM_DragDistance and feels like it’s set to a good 10 pixels or more.
So the ‘BUG’ is basically that you are accustomed to Windows. I have never experienced this issue, and it should not be considered a bug simply because it’s different to Windows.
So possibly you can argue that KDE could offer a configurable threshold - and the place for that would be the kde forum.
I’d say only users with fast, impulsive clicking styles (gamers, ADHD users, or anyone with jittery mouse habits) would notice things like this.
You can test it by holding the mouse button on a tab, then dragging the mouse as slowly as you can, you’ll see the point where it breaks away - and it’s not something most folks can do accidentally.
Yes, lower acceleration, learn smoother mouse control and be less jerky.
sorry i forgot to add the observed behavior is intermittent(for me at least). i tried moving my mouse slow speed and it did it immediately then i couldn’t reproduce it moving faster and holding longer.
I’ve also been having this issue. I’ve only experienced this on CachyOS, not on Windows or other Linux version (with both the same and different DE’s). I’ve used two different Pulsar mice so if it’s a hardware issue then they’re both affected. What I do know, is it’s absolutely not user error.
If you guys are on Firefox, you guys can try about:config and look for browser.tabs.allowTabDetach and set it to False. That makes it less annoying while we look for a solution
I came from Windows, I have never seen this behaviour once in a lot more years than you can count… but then there’s always the knee jerk from the one or to people out if a million that discover something they can mess up
It really is just a matter of tuning - and I disagree that everything should be tuned to match Windows.
The expression ‘fast-click’ is misleading, because you must be HOLDING the mouse button down for the drag operation not to quit.
You also must ‘drag’ for about 10 pixels before the drag operation even starts.
This is also not a matter for CachyOS, it is a matter for the environment you installed - if it’s KDE, then bring it up in the KDE forum.
There’s really no use arguing about it here in your echo chamber.
I also won’t waste more time explaining, I have experienced being talked down by people who don’t understand their own motor patterns or usage patterns… the millions of people that don’t have the problem aren’t present, so there’s no point trying to defend it.
But however much I experiment and try, I cannot come even close to replicating this issue.
In the past, we had ‘mouse drag’ threshold settings, but with the move to libinput, a ‘happy medium’ was agreed upon instead.
the fact is you are the one talking down to people. you can’t insult people then play the victim and say YOU are being talked down to. we have been nothing but respectful from the start. if you don’t want to help then don’t. we are trying to find the source of our problem you interjecting to say the problem doesn’t exist isn’t helping.
this is the problem we are not holding and the drag operation activate.
people showing up to report the same error isn’t an echo chamber its a pattern emerging.
the fact its not happening on your rig doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. if you were here to help this would be diagnostically helpful to find whats the difference between your rig and ours. i can reproduce it. i know its a bug because its inconsistent.
people like you telling others the distro is perfect and that they are the problem is the reason why the most people don’t switch to linux
now if you don’t mind we will continue and try to make our experience on cachyos more enjoyable
