Using KDE Plasma. While using normally or even when not using at all and leaving the system at idle, this issue happens. The issue is NOT what is described here.
The issue is that while and while not using the desktop, consistently after an hour to an hour and a half, I lose sound first, then followed by plasma crashing, followed by the program that I am using just closing and lastly, I am dropped on to the tty. I then have to ctrl + alt + F2 to switch to another tty where I can log-in and sudo systemctl restart sddm so that I can log-in again and use my computer for another hour and a half until it happens again.
I believe that it might have something to do with permissions or kmix. I took a look at the journalctl -xe logs and I see when and what program it’s crashing but I don’t know what the next step to take is. It has been like this for the past 2 months only in cachyOS. When using other distro with only the cachyOS kernel, this does not happen.
I have searched the forum and the web with no success. Most result that come up either say they can’t boot at all or that it immediately crashes after logging in to the DE.
I think I have the same issue. Ive never seen it happen but I usually walk a way from it for 10 to 30 minutes and when I come back I’m at TTY and have to switch to the F2 slot as well to get desktop.
In addition though, once this occurs the following happens:
I can no longer shutdown the comptuer, it says “going down now” but just hangs there and I can actually switch out back to a desktop session
When I open a new terminal window fish hangs during initialization with high cpu usage until I hit break
Trying to sleep the laptop gives a password prompt saying permission is needed to sleep when others are logged in (this might have to do with switching sessions)
When I open chromium, there is a vaapitest process that never finishes with high CPU, which while I’m not familiar with it, seems ro me like a check thats supoosed to run extremely briefly at startup and is instead hanging
I wonder if the graphics driver is crashing or something.
I don’t have any solutions to add but I wonder if this is fairly hardware dependent? Not sure what you’re on but I’m using an old 2014 MSI GE70 2PE Apache Pro with an Nvidia 860m. Perhaps you’re on older hardware as well?
