I haven’t updated for about 5 days, and everything was working perfectly. Then I decided to update, opened a terminal, typed “paru -Syu,” and updated everything.
When I restarted, after entering the password, the screen went dark for 2 minutes, then the desktop started, but a minute later, the login screen appeared again. I entered the password again, and the screen went black again, but this time permanently.
Sometimes I managed to click “restart” on the login screen that appeared again. Other times, I had to restart by forcibly shutting down the PC using the button on the tower.
Everything was working perfectly before I did “paru -Syu,” a couple of hours ago.
Just wanted to say that this issue is not necessarily related to the last update. This has happened to me with version 6.15 and I’ve seen people mentioning happening to them in version 6.16 too.
The two times it happened to me went like: turn on pc (fresh start; no wake up from sleep), type password on SDDM, takes like thrice the time to show me my desktop, after a minute it sends me back to SDDM and asks me for my password again, put in password and then the graphical interface hangs and dies. The second time I was able to swap to a TTY (ctrl + alt + f3) after waiting it out a lot (like 3-5 minutes) and from there I just rebooted.
To my knowledge this has no solution (at least I haven’t seen anyone posting one). If it is happening to you a lot after the update and it never happened before then I would suggest going back to a snapshot but the issue itself is not new.
That’s the exact issue I’ve been having for a couple days. Thought I was going nuts, pretty hard to find any useful info on this. Been troubleshooting for hours and haven’t come up with anything that worked. Oddly enough, it only happens on a cold boot, which sent down a long rabbit hole (race conditions, akonadi, network manager, nvidia, kde themes, etc.) that was a red herring as it now seems.
While you’re still experiencing the issue I would suggest to show the logs to see if there’s something there. I doubt I can be of help from there on but maybe some cachyos power user can see something.
A lot of times when this happens nobody provides the logs (myself included) so I’m not sure if it was ever properly addressed.
Same here. Yesterday, I was able to work normally with CachyOS, but since this morning, I’ve also had the problem that I get kicked out shortly after the first login, and after i entered my password, the system freezes. I don’t leave the PC or anything, I actively move the mouse and click through the start menu when i was kicked out. I also tried to do a system update that was offered, but shortly after clicking, the login screen appeared.
Yesterday, I logged into my Windows installation and, after a while, into CachyOS. Since then, I have been able to log into CachyOS as usual. I haven’t done any updates on CachyOS since the “login problem.” Strange.
After a few days, the error resolved itself, without updating or anything. I don’t know what caused this, but it’s quite rare that it was resolved without touching anything.
Was also experiencing this issue during the last days, the fallback image did not exhibit the same behaviour. After re-running sudo mkinitcpio -Pjust now, the regular image went back to working properly.
Perhaps it could have something to do with autodetect and/or chwd and an update to the nvidia modules causing this to happen?
This is a bug and its occurrence is erratic; it’s not gonna happen every time you turn on your PC. Just because you didn’t get it now doesn’t mean it’s solved. It happened to me back in version 6.15 and it hasn’t happened again probably because I don’t turn off my PC that often. If it was solved then people wouldn’t have had it in version 6.16 and now you guys in version 6.17, as the issue is at least present since 6.15.
It’s also not related to GPU vendors as this has happened to people using nvidia and amd GPUs.
Unless your issue is different than mine and you had this happening to you 100% of the time you turned on your PC and after updating it never happened again I wouldn’t say anything is solved.
But about this one ITT: my hunch is that it’s akonadi/too many browser profiles taxing the profile sync daemon too hard after login. It’s fixed on my end now by: removing superfluous browsers and temp. disconnecting korginizer.
Sorry If I’m out of place. I’m not used to any form of social media and extremely new to CachyOS. I had a similar issue where the system would hang for a bit after adding login details, show desktop, then ask for login again before locking up forcing a reset. PLEASE BE CAREFUL trying this workaround as I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to take advice from me on this. I tried a workaround where you TTY by ctrl+alt+F3 , sudo pacman -S plasma-login-manager , disable sddm with sudo systemctl disable sddm , then sudo systemctl enable plasmalogin , finally sudo reboot.
Afterward, I no longer got asked for double logins. The screen would be a black login screen until an update gave it a default wallpaper. I’m unsure, but maybe SDDM is the culprit?
