Cachy OS randomly lockscreen and freeze

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a strange issue with CachyOS. After running for a while, my PC locks itself automatically for no apparent reason, and then when I try to unlock it by entering my password, the pc instantly freezes, forcing me to restart the pc with the shutdown button to experience the same thing again

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Is this after the plasma 6.3 update?

No i actually have 6.2.5 version of Plasma, and KDE Frameworks is 6.10.0

My cachy version is 6.13.2-2

Update: I discovered that Firefox was causing it, once i launch it, some moment later it was causing the issue.

I still don’t know why but i uninstalled it and installed it with sudo pacman -S firefox and now the problem is fixed

@Kergali Which repo was the firefox from that was causing the problem and which repo did you install from to fix it?

Hi guys,

I’ve experienced the same issue recently; the first time was on Plasma-wayland - i removed KDE; on Hyprland i had the same freeze/lockups-solved with hard-reset and on Cinnamon on wayland i faced with the same issue. Anyone faced with similar problems?

Sorry for late reply, i don’t have notifications enabled on this topic. So I remember downloading it from the “Cachy Hello” app, see screenshot below:

And i reinstalled it from the default repo of cachy with sudo pacman -S firefox

Is the issue caused before or after opening a certain app ? Because in my case it was firefox from the “cachy hello” app

@Kergali , the issue appear during the Hyprland/KDE session, randomly with or without Firefox/Cachy Hello opened or other apps.
I’ve reinstalled the OS without KDE and Firefox and seems to be ok so far

@Kergali , i forgot to tell, the freeze happened also on Cinnamon on Wayland.I really believe that happen because something is wrong with wayland.

Important update:
@Claudiu Indeed you are right, i just had the freeze without even starting Firefox, this issue is super weird, i’m gonna try ot reinstall cachy and see if it’s stable on the long term.

Is there any news around this issue? I’m facing this problem as well on a regular basis - it just happened 8 times in a row almost making me go back to Windows -.-

Some things I observed:

  • When it happens, I don’t see the KDE logo welcome before entering the desktop environment and typically have a black screen for long enough to make me think that something broke.

  • Having to do a hard restart via the power button can be avoided by clicking ‘restart’ in the lock screen.

  • Issue typically appears within 1 minute after entering the desktop environment.

I am was experiencing similar issues to the extend that i have now temporarily installed EndevourOS on my machine. I dont know if this helps but my observations are as follows. Please bear in mind that i am a complete noob

  1. It tend to happen on systems with a DGPU. i say this because I had 2 systems, always updated them at the same time, One has Ryzen 3 3200G and no dGPU and i dont experiance issues with that system. My system with R5 7600 and RX 6700XT on Asrock B650M-HDV/M.2 always have issues after those updates. Sometimes dosent boot, sometimes boot and freezes after a few minutes, sometimes boots and freezes with some graphical glitches and you cant actually read what is on the screen.
  2. It relates to the latest updates pushed around end of August, my system was running fine before that.
  3. It does not matter what Iso you use, I tried the July 2025 iso, then the 250826 iso and finally the latest 250828 iso.
  4. At first i thought it was RAM related but i used the Memtest 86 included with the Iso and it passes, now i was thinking maybe its an SSD error because i had to force shutdown the system many many times until i decided to temporarily install another Distro.
    I really love Cachy but for now it dosent seem to work for me. I am also waiting for the bug to be fixed, perhaps when a new iso comes out then i will try again.

Did you launch Chromium? I’m also met the same freeze symptom randomly after launch Chromium. Never happen again if I don’t launch it.

I use Brave. Never used Chromium but since Brave is Chrome based maybe the same applies. As an update, i reinstalled Cachy. The Installation failed to complete but to my surprise, when i rebooted, i was greeted with Cachy (was very happy after waiting on Endevour for a while). I will do more testing and educating myself. (I saved failed installation report as well as a bug report to better understands whats going on like the “plasma-gmenudbusmenuproxy.service: Failed with result ‘exit-code’“ etc i am currently getting. Thanks

Hi all.

I have the same problem.

Only a hard shutdown helps after the freeze.

Only things i remember before having the bug.

I did install cachyos-snapper-support.

I did update to the August cachyos version.

Do all of you use snapper-support?

One thing i did notice.

My Firefox Profile got borked. Seems Suspicious, because the Thread-Creator did mention Firefox did seem to cause Problems and additionaly the post here CachyOS broken after update - #12 by dtm-beep , mentions akonadi/too many browser profiles as an culprit.

Some Things i did try/ helped at my setup

The crash seems to be triggered if you log in from your secondary monitor.

  • Quick Fix: Before typing your password, use your mouse to click on the password field on your primary monitor first. This seems to avoid the bug and allows the session to start correctly.

  • Disable Akonadi (sudo mv /usr/bin/akonadi_control /usr/bin/akonadi_control.bak)

Hello same problem here since yesterday.
Choosing the primary monitor doesn’t solve it.

I think this is the same issue I have been having as well. Here is the link to the post: Long black screen after login and KDE session crash after some minutes - #10 by West While increasingly predictable, yet still hard to identify the underlying issue (at least for me and that fact this issue is still occurring over 6 months later), it makes CachyOS almost completely dysfunctional as it requires to reboot or even hard boot several times in a row on a good day just to get into a single desktop session. Literally, it takes me about 15 minutes to boot into my OS only once cleanly after an average of 4 failures requiring reboot. Try to make sure you hit reboot button instead of trying to login when your thrown back to the login screen, it should save you some time of having to hard boot. However, you still have to pay attention to the startup processes constantly until you get into a usable Wayland session. Hopefully this issue’s underlying mechanism is identified soon and fixed as it is a massive amount of resources in terms of time spent troubleshooting including reinstalling your OS several times as well as rebooting constantly after you have realized reinstalling the OS doesn’t fix the problem.
