Unable to run system upgrade

Hello!

I’ve installed CachyOS on 13th of February so this is a really fresh install. Since then I am unable to run any upgrades. First time around I’ve ended up in emergency mode - root account locked, so I just rolled back. Since yesterday, I’ve been fighting harder. I’ve logged through a live ISO into root, ran the upgrades again, but I’ve still ended up in emergency mode. I rolled back again. Today I tried the upgrade one more time, but now I end up in this situation:

Konsole

Tray update does not work, hello does not work, -Syu does the same thing, this:

bash -c 'sudo pacman -Sy --needed archlinux-keyring && sudo pacman -Su'

also nothing.

I’ve tried to look into the ncurses since that does seem to be a new issue. I have these if it helps:

Completely new laptop. Has never been kissed by another operating system. I use Limine.

My internet somewhat sucks, so I’m used to running rate-mirrors every day. It makes the check and download proceed, but still does not finish.

Refreshing keyrings helped me with the initial installation but now also nothing.

sudo pacman -Sy archlinux-keyring cachyos-keyring

sudo pacman-key --refresh-keys

I can however at least run individual package installs through the package installer.

Note that I have an external hard drive in exFat which I sometimes connect but I run no apps on it.

Is there something else I can try to make it work? I don’t want to give up on Cachy.

Please let me know if I can fetch you some more data if needed.

What is the output if you run a pacman in a terminal, what is the error message?

Here you go, I just shortened the midpart:

sudo pacman -Syu

Please let me know if you meant some other command I can run or if you need the whole thing.

Looks like connectivity or very crappy mirrors. Could also be a bad system time clock.

Can I somehow manipulate the timeout limit to give it a better chance?

My system time is accurate to where I’m at. GMT+1

Hello and welcome,

Looks like your mirror/repo config is super not correct.

Its up to you whether this is enabled or not - its what provides all the lib32 packages and would likely be needed if you intend to game.

The rest of the issue is bigger.

You should have at least one more entry for [cachyos].
And usually, unless you bave a very old CPU, an additional 3 for architecture optimized repos, ex; [cachyos-v3], [cachyos-core-v3], [cachyos-extra-v3] if it were a v3 cpu.

See here for some more;

Right now you are more or less running regular Arch but with it configured a little funny. With only apparently a few ‘cachy’ packages added from the AUR. You do not have any cachy mirrorlist either. You are not running Cachy.

That seems to also be in addition to your ‘arch’ mirrors also being configured incorrectly and at least partially fail to resolve.

How did we get here?

Or is this actually an Arch install?

In any case it is not difficult to fix .. just refer to the wiki;

No idea what happened. This is a fresh install of an CachyOS ISO. Anyway, turns out I should have the znver4 so I’ve added it, downloaded it but the reinstall gives me this mess:

OK, update, I’ve uncommented the [multilib] in pacman.conf and the installation seems to be proceeding so far.

And this occurred directly after install and with no other modifications?

Maybe running some sort of auto-update thing?

Or maybe got a pacnew and just replaced the pacman.conf with the pacnew?

(That is not how to manage those - despite some poor scripts performing it.)

I’m definitely not at the level to make any modifications so I avoid those. The only updates I’ve used are the ones recommended. I did, however, run into a pacnew yesterday, so oops, that one is probably on me. That might explain the messed up pacman.conf. Yet I don’t know how I managed to get it.

Ok, the download and install is done!

Yet, I’ve noticed these errors while it was running, should I be worried?

error: failed retrieving file ‘lib32-gcc-libs-15.2.1+r604+g0b99615a8aef-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst’ from archlinux.cachyos.org : The requested URL returned error: 404

warning: too many errors from archlinux.cachyos.org, skipping for the remainder of this transaction

If the DL+update completed then those are just warnings that those files could not be found (at that exact version at that exact moment) at that host - but that it silently went on to get it from the next mirror in your list.
Well and that last one stating it wont even try at archlinux.cachyos.org for the rest of the transaction.

Awesome. I shall commence the reboot. Hopefully I wont end up on the emergency screen again.

What most likely happened is this:

  • There was an update for the pacman package
  • That package provides /etc/pacman.conf
    • You can always check which package installed a file: pacman -Qo /etc/pacman.conf
    • And search for more info about it on https://packages.cachyos.org/
  • The file likely changed in the update, causing a pacnew to be generated
  • You likely accepted the changes, assuming the package knows best
    • The pacman.conf you pasted is identical to the one I linked above (current repo version)

The crucial bit of Linux lore you’re probably missing is this:

Generally speaking, the contents of /etc/ are the system configuration for YOUR system. Packages may provide files in that location, but these are merely defaults and starting points. The files may then be modified to better suit your specific system; be it manually by you, or by the CachyOS installer, or by other applications (though that would require you entering the root password in most cases).

Specifically /etc/pacman.conf is modified automatically when you install CachyOS, to use the correct repos for your CPU architecture. The file provided by the package is just a bare bones starting point, not really functional as is. You should never replace your /etc/pacman.conf wholesale via pacnew.

Best practice would be to check what changed and make your own judgement of which changes you want to incorporate. It should almost always be safe to just disregard the pacnew for this file.

I happen to also run a znver4 system.

My pacman.conf contains the following uncommented repos (I stripped comments for brevity):

[cachyos-znver4]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/cachyos-v4-mirrorlist

[cachyos-core-znver4]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/cachyos-v4-mirrorlist

[cachyos-extra-znver4]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/cachyos-v4-mirrorlist

[cachyos]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/cachyos-mirrorlist

[core]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

[extra]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

[multilib]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

I haven’t modified this file since install, so this is probably what you want in yours as well. The order matters! And make sure no other repo entries are left uncommented.

Welp, so, here we are.

I’m on live ISO and in root. I fetched fstab from root if it helps. How do I get out of this purgatory?

Wait a minute. I’ve just re-read your post and I seem to be missing the [cachyos] itself inside of my config. Goddamit. I’ll run the update again and hopefully something positive will happen.

If that doesn’t do it, personally, I would probably just use btrfs snapshots to roll back all the way to before you accepted the pacnew (assuming it’s not too terribly far back), and update as usual from there (this time, disregarding/deleting the pacnew for pacman.conf). Or, at least, to the last bootable state, then fix the pacman.conf and see if it updates okay from there.

If you accepted any other pacnews in /etc/, that might be part of the problem.

There are a bunch of posts/threads relating to the proper handling of pacnews but I will try to link to one that in turn should link to the archwiki article for more;
