So I have been running cachyos KDE plasma for about 9 months now and whilst the experience has been mostly good (quite a large adjustment to fish), i am quite literally fed up with the remote desktop experience.

I run a multi monitor setup so i know that can be a bit difficult but literally nothing works.

  • firstly my built for some reason was missing krdp. so i installed it using paru.
  • after installation i had to enable it in the UI, which was simple
  • then i realized this was not allowed in the firewall (despite the previous step) so i added the correct 3389 rules.

i connect from my windows machine, it gets the certificate warning and then established a connection and immediately closes, i have found no way of working around this issue.

so naturally i move on to something else, i heard good things about rustdesk for cachyos so i give that a go and whilst from my linux maching to my windows machine works fine, the windows to linux machine has all sorts of issues, from screen share prompt in kde every time, no mouse control, rendering all 3 screens in one window etc etc.

i feel these are fundamentals in an OS, remote desktop is so important to work for an OS especially for someone in my situation i just dont get how the implementation can be so poor.

if anyone has any advice on resolving these issues i would be soo happy to get this working.

For clarity I have a triple monitor setup,

As a rustdesk user, rustdesk on wayland is ass. Try using plasma-x11-sesion and see if that makes RustDesk work more to your liking.

I have all my other machines on chrome remote, so i tried getting that working for ages but got stuck at successful connection but black screen.

I moved to Sunshine+Moonlight with tailscale for remote access. The setup was 1000x easier than trying chrome remote or the other choices i ran through which i forget the names of at this moment.

It offers me what I need. Keyboard+mouse control. Its meant for local wireless game streaming but i dont really have a use for that yet.

I appreciate the advice but i really dislike the “go back to x11 approach” wayland has been out years now, distros are dropping x11 support and it really is time to move on, my remote worked flawlessly on kde neon so i was expecting a better experience with this too tbh

i did have a dabble with moonlight, i like it, maybe this is the answer for now.

I don’t care for the go back to x11 approach either, but specifically for Rustdesk, for the time being until they fix their wayland issues, x11 is the best option for Rustdesk. Have you tried using Remmina for RDP connections? I had a go at using tailscale for a virtual LAN and using Remmina to RDP into my work desktop, and it worked fine, but the latency was too slow for my needs (remote CAD design) but it didn’t have any issues with wayland.

I also had the exactly same problem with krdp (ceriticate waring → connection → immediate disconnection). Tried some work around with reinstalling xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-kde, but nothing changes. I didn’t find much trouble shooting about krdp elseware. Hope someone can help. I have similar issue.Installed xdg-desktop-portal xdg-desktop-portal-kde. Also installed freerdp package to make remmina work with rdp. Set up port and user in kde settings, enabled service.

On windows client set 32bit, disabled “Persistent bitmap caching“ and unchecked all the “beauty“ checkboxes. Also set UsePAM yes in sshd.conf.

Next i tried to rollback to

sudo pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/x/xdg-desktop-portal-kde/xdg-desktop-portal-kde-6.2.5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

But result the same.

Next i updated package to latest again and tried to connect from WindowsApp on Android and error now different. Also i see for a moment something like one-time screen blink on pc. Also i started to see KDE notification when trying to connect.

I have found cachy os wayland my default desktop is also lacking in any Remote Access Program that is “easy to setup”. I hope the developers are aware this is a missing link in the OS and needs a solution for the beginner to intermediate users. Due to this I am looking to leave the Cachy OS behind and go back to another DISTRO that has a track record where this is easy to setup and actually works. Having a built in Remote Program without spending hours to setup is completely missing I have attempted RUST, REMMINA and GNOME-REMOTE-DESKTOP and while these install none of them work and it is not worth the aggravation. Perhaps I may return in a couple years when it finally matures. Thank you

For me I use rustdesk without any real issues all though I only remote from my cachyos laptop into my windows desktop. The ONLY issue I had is that wayland wasn’t forwarding my super key keybinds correctly and I had to manually set a kwin window rule to not engage with the super key when rustdesk was in focus and then everything worked perfectly.

That said, I know rustdesk doesn’t do well remoting into another wayland session yet.

Could I request a fix on this from the DEV Team to add to the Wayland edition a built in simple easy to use program that sets up quickly for Cachy OS, where would I do that? Thank you

What are you even requesting? There’s nothing for the CachyOS dev team to do. The problem is with wayland and remote desktop software. Either use an X11 session, and X11 DE or WM, or figure out which remote desktop software/protocol you want to use and then how to configure your particular software and DE/WM solution.

For me, I have Hyprland, KDE, and Cosmic installed on my laptop. In KDE I had to add a kwin window rule to have the system ignore the meta key when Rust Desk is in focus. That can’t be done in cosmic which means I can’t use Cosmic to successfully remote into my work PC from Cosmic. In hyprland, I needed to configure a custom window rule, a bash script that runs in the back ground, and a keybind submap that only is active when Rustdesk is in focus.

Seriously though, if remote desktop software is super important to you AND you want to do little troubleshooting, just install Plasma X11 session.

I think you’re on the right track.

Search the internet first before asking questions in the forum. After targeted research (Arch wiki, Arch Linux, and all the other Arch-based forums, including this one), you’ll often find the solution to the problem and won’t even need to ask any questions.

Who’s panties are in a twist. I just don’t understand what you’re even asking the CachyOS dev team to do. It’s not an issue they can fix. They don’t code wayland compositors and they don’t code remote clients. Like I said for KDE, at least for me remoting into a windows PC, it’s as simple as adding a Kwin window rule in the KDE settings to ignore the meta key while Rustdesk is in focus. For something like hyprland I have this added to my hyprland.conf

Anyway, this isn’t really an issue the CachyOS dev team can do anything about. But remote desktop software works as expected under Plasma X11 session, XFCE, Cinnomon, i3, LXDE, LXQT, Mate, etc (ie any x11 based DE or WM)

Just an update i settled for running moonlight-qt and moonlight client, both of these have worked really well, one thing i noticed is i had to wack the bandwidth off the charts to reduce input lag.

I think many people here do not realize you can chose to run either Wayland or X11 when logging in if you have both installed. So you can continue to run Wayland natively but use X11 for the remote sessions only.

What I would like to see is an entry in the CachyHello App to install x11KDE and remote desktop with firewall port opening as a triggered question. I have done something similar at work for ubuntu clients so our users can set it up without having any tech knowledge or skill what so ever.
