SWTOR non steam version installation help

Hi I was wondering if anyone could please help me install SWTOR on CachyOS? I have the non steam version. I read that I should install it via wine but am new to linux. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to Cachy

  1. Run the STEAM version and see if errors occur, according to STEAM itself it has Gold/Platinum status meaning it runs out of the box through STEAM. You can easly link your SWTOR account with your STEAM account and utilize the vast experience that Valve has, running games on Linux out of the box.

  2. As this is the distribution board you should better look for game support on a suitable platform. Linux gaming is nothing new with the recent trend but has a lon history. My goto ressource on all things Linux gaming is ProtonDB (SWTOR: https://www.protondb.com/app/1286830?device=pc) since this is a huge collection on sharing how to run a specific game on Linux (independently of the distribution).

  3. if you want to run through WINE there are a lot of good tutorials out there, since WINE is around like forever.

In short, download swtor, open a console and run the installation through wine

(in my case: wine ~henning/Downloads/SWTOR_setup.exe )

  4. I strongly recommend not doing this like 3. since this requires some experience if you run into errors. You could consider game installers like Lutris (lutris.net) or Faugus (GitHub - Faugus/faugus-launcher: A simple and lightweight app for running Windows games using UMU-Launcher · GitHub) that will take care for many of the manual steps to be done with WINE.

And finally 5.

Enjoy gaming on Linux  it has become a lot easier since my first tries with linux gaming on SuSE 4.2 in 1996

Thank you for your reply. I did try Lutris and for some reason I can’t link my steam account with SWTOR for steam version. Also Lutris just won’t work. wine seems to be the only choice for me.

If you log in to your account: SWTOR | Sign in you will find the link STEAM button the your account settings tab and if there are issues for some reasons you can contact either EA or STEAM for support.

As for Lutris, Faugus etc. you could provide some details on your issues before trying WINE manually.

Anyhow, here you can find WINE and the WINE dokumentation:

Thank you, I’ll try to link my steam account to my swtor account and see if I can get it to work that way. Lutris didn’t have an installation script for Star wars the old republic, I tried to do it manually but it was using umu and not wine or something, sorry new to linux. ai tried to guide me through installing it via wine but i couldn’t get it to work.

I read through wine documentation and was bewildered lol. If I can’t do it with steam I’ll post my error script when I try wine again. Thanks for the information.

no luck with Steam version linking to swtor.com they say it’s a steam issue and steam says it’s their issue so unless I can get the non steam version working I’ll have to dual boot with windows 11 lol. I know it’s a very old game so it has lots of issues with modern dynamics and hardware.

Thanks for answering with wine help, but my tiny brain just can’t handle all that information. Someday I’ll be able to wave goodbye to windows forever but for now I’m stuck with it, till I’m bored with an old MMORPG that is reportedly getting a makeover.

Thanks for the help.

A simple “howto install SWTOR on Linux” websearch came up with this step-by-step

description, maybe this can help you:

Thank you for the information, for some reason when I search for guides I get a lot of AI stuff and very little actual information. but I use Edge so maybe that’s why. I’ll try it if I can figure out ubuntu speak vs arch speak :stuck_out_tongue: lol. It works on Steam but I have to use my son’s account since it was linked to the steam account. So I know it will work if I can figure out how to do it on the swtor.com launcher version. Isn’t wine-staging just wine now also? and I read that wine/bottles together cause issues with games running poorly? Perhaps that’s bad information.

Anyway thank you for the information, and the continued help, it’s nice to see in a forum.

Thank you,
