Steam on Cosmic DE

Hey everyone!

I really like how the Cosmic desktop looks and runs. I installed it, and everything seems to be working fine except for one thing: When I launch Steam, then try to start a game, Steam shows that the game is running, but the game window doesn’t actually appear. It pops up in the taskbar at the bottom, like it’s running in the background, but I can’t bring it to the front by clicking on the icon either.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

You could double check if you are using Steam Compatibility Layer for the game, so it’s running the Proton version.
Some games have a Linux native, but you probably want to force Proton because Linux native ports are kind of behind in most cases (game devs crunch on which platform to spend time on) and Cachy and Cosmic are the ‘opposite of behind’ so to say. Proton has better performance overall too.

Thanks so much for your kindness and taking the time to help!

I’m running all my Steam games through Proton CachyOS Latest. Speaking of which, is Cosmic Desktop stable enough and mature enough to be used permanently with decent results, regardless of what apps I’m using?

The main programs I need are Davinci Resolve, Steam, and ComfyUI. It’s also really important that I can use Alt+Tab to switch between full-screen applications and the desktop without losing my place in any of them.

My personal opinion is that Cosmic is for enthusiasts as of right now, not production-ready workflows. I’ve seen some high-praise which is very legit because it does some things extremely well. But, KDE is mature enough for Valve to use it on their SteamOS, and it does the Alt+Tab behavior in a good way and user friendly, while also providing good stability on rolling release distros (it’s much more careful about shipping regressions and unstable features than it used to a few years back)

Thank you for your advice! I will wait for Cosmic to grow up keeping an eye on this DE, looks great for me.
