Spectacle not recording video

I saw a similar thread here about this, it was marked as solved, but it really isn’t - at least not for me. I have nvidia 4060TI and Ryzen9 9950X.

When starting spectacle normally - screen recording says recording, but then that file is never written. The workaround from this thread works - Spectacle doesnt record my screen - #15 by Melon - but the logs are far from clean:

resrtart and test with and without export variables

With or without the variable, when started from the terminal, the video gets recorded and the file is there, even with all the error scrolls in the terminal.
When started from the keyboard shortcut or from App panel shortcut - It says it records, but the file is never created.

I noticed this much and mine on tesseract:

NVD_BACKEND=direct LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nvidia && spectacle

spectacle: Attempting to use Tesseract library "tesseract"
spectacle: Detected Tesseract version "5.5.2"
spectacle: Loaded Tesseract runtime library from "libtesseract.so"

Try to install it, or re-installing.

Then Reload:

sudo ldconfig
ldconfig -p | grep libtesseract

        libtesseract.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/libtesseract.so.5
        libtesseract.so (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/libtesseract.so

https://streamable.com/1oxlhw

That is an OCR module, but nevertheless, not working even with it installed. I’ll try to reinstall spectacle later and see…

I’m not sure how you call spectacle to record, I’ll use Key-Combo [Ctrl] + [Meta or Window logo]+[r]

I’m not much of GUI user, I rely heavily on CLI.

So I came up with a somewhat elegant solution to this.

First, we copy the system copy of the desktop file to our local path:

mkdir -p ~/.local/share/applications/
cp /usr/share/applications/org.kde.spectacle.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/

Then we edit the Exec directives inside the desktop file to prefix the environment variable using bash as a wrapper so they actually take effect:

sed -i 's|Exec=spectacle|Exec=bash -c "NVD_BACKEND=direct LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nvidia spectacle|g' \
        ~/.local/share/applications/org.kde.spectacle.desktop

And finally we reload this so it takes effect:

kbuildsycoca6

This seems to fix it for now - there’s probably a real solution upstream but for a workaround this is fine.

To be fair I never had issue’s on spectacle recording, but this workaround breaks recording for me.

Thanks though @Xaero252 and Welcome to the forums. :wink:

Yes, it’s a pretty fragile solution as it’s Nvidia hardware and closed source driver dependent dependent. It does result in my screen capture both working and using Nvidia vaapi for acceleration.Though, I think that’s also the primary cause for the model of failure to begin with. I imagine AMD and Intel graphics hardware has no such issue without the workaround.

i think, this one unsolved (kinda) issue for specatcle (since kde plasma update to major release last year i think), so i think better made an issue on spectacle instead
from what i’ve experienced in the past (still using 3070)
this is easily fixed (last year), by enabling the onboard gpu (from my 7950x3d)
because the spectacle is kinda only wants to use igpu / amd related if your cpu is AMD
so it’s fine if you’re using AMD GPU, but when using NVIDIA GPU, it’s broke like this (since last year)

just sharing my experiences when using spectacle + nvidia gpu
