Snapper or timeshift?

Pretty new to linux

I came here from garuda, and i loved the part in garuda where it did auto backups that i could pick from the boot menu.

after a search i see these:

and

whats the pros and cons of each one or they are the same?

i just want something easy to use that makes auto backups each time i install anything new

thanks all

We provide snapper support via cachyos-snapper-support package. I don’t think timeshift will work with out subvolume scheme so your only option is likely snapper.

do you have a guide for newbies to setup snapper auto snapshots?

Our package sets up auto snapshots everytime pacman transaction is done.

amazing, so all i need to do is install this 1 package and everytime i update my system it makes a snapshot and i can select it from the boot menu?

Yes

Depends on the boot manager you are using. If you’re using systemd-boot, then booting to snapshots isn’t possible.

dam i am using system-d :sleepy:

so i need to wipe my disk and install cachyos with grub.

thanks for your help.

I installed Timeshift before I knew snapper was preferred and it seemed to work, you had to start cronie manually and that was that. I didn’t try restoring to see if it really worked but there were no error messages. Just use snapper its more modern and automatic.

Timeshift works with out issue straight out of the gate.

You can try my tutorial - How to set snapper optimally - #4 by vawaver

You don’t have to wipe to do grub. For example, originally I was using grub, but I started having some issues. Then I installed limine and it was claiming my config was wrong, so then I tried refind and eventually back to limine. And yes limine and refind can do snapshots as well. Grub is generally the easiest and most used.
