RTX 5070 Ti frequent system crashes requiring hard reset

Hello there,

I am experiencing frequent system crashes on bleeding edge and LTS kernel. I am on 610.43.02 driver, I can’t tell if the issue is related to older drivers because I just started using CachyOS, and this was the driver that was installed during the OS installation process.

When the crash occurs, first peripherals freeze, and then the screen goes black. After that, I need to hard reset the machine. I’ve tried waiting to see if it recovers but after 10 min nothing happened.

I haven’t tried to troubleshoot this in any way, maybe trying an older driver would be a good first step? If anyone has any suggestions, it would be great. I also found this thread but I am not sure if the issue is the same: Full Crash while using Vivaldi

Below is the journalctl log:

FYI: I am new to linux, and not a person with vast technical knowledge.

Thanks in advance!

Would you mind formatting the console output with the </> button for readability reasons? Thanks.

Thanks for replying. I’ve edited the original post to format the console output, hopefully, this is what you have asked for.

@HardCode4All
Hi man, don’t bother looking into this. I decided to abandon Linux for the time being. It takes too much time to learn about things and resolve all the issues I have, which there are many for some reason.

Today, I’ve spent 4 hours learning about system services to fix something, and I got nowhere. I could have spent this time with kids.

I guess that I will give it a go in the future when I have more time for myself, and in the meantime, will revert to Microslop Garbage 11.

Thank you for your time.

Maybe you have the wrong teacher? "AI"s can be very bad advisors sometimes.

Out of curiosity: would you let us know what you were trying to achieve with System Services? Normally, one would not have to even touch them for just doing “regular things”.

But sure, if you feel this is all overwhelming, I can understand that. I spend way too much time here and on my system, but that is a conscious decision on my part, because I’m a nerd and want to learn all the intricacies of this ridiculously powerful OS.

Maybe give Linux Mint a spin, that is said to be much “easier” from a beginner’s perspective (although from my perspective as a power user, I’d never want to go back to any Debian thing).

I could have spent this time with kids.

You could’ve spend the time with your kids, learning Linux all together  Just kidding.

It’s sad to see you leave, but we won’t keep you from locking yourself into the Windows cage again. We’ll be here should you decide to come back once your kids are grown

Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate that.

To be honest, I was tired and emotional, and I vented a bit. I installed W11, and once I saw all the bloat AGAIN!, it motivated me to reconsider other options. I’ve decided to run a dual boot setup which I will get into this evening if I have time. I suppose it is a good middle ground for now.

I really like CachyOS, it just feels like how the operating system should be. I guess that all the complexity was abstracted away from me because I used Windows for years. I like the level of customizability of Linux, and the lack of bloat. I think that I will give CachyOS another go instead of trying other distros, the wiki page is quite informative and there are workarounds for a lot of issues I encountered.

I needed it for the fix for instant wake up after suspend, I found an article that explained it very well, but that was after I messed it up trying to do it myself. I read that I can also utilize it to connect to ProtonVPN on boot which I have asked about in a different post on this forums.

There is nothing wrong with that, I don’t judge. We should all be able to decide for ourselves what we wanna do in life.

I am actually trying to discourage them from spending excessive time in front of the screen. I think that they will develop interest in it with time anyway if I keep using Linux.

I have a feeling that many of the problems I experienced so far with CachyOS were caused by me trying to fix things. I noticed that AI advice isn’t often that good, when I confronted it with some alternative solutions I found on forums, and it replied “you are absolutely right…”, I knew it didn’t give me good advice. LOL. Even in Cachy Wiki there is a red banner warning before doing that.

Let’s see how things go. If I run into problems again, I will be sure to go through docs and wiki and the forums. The learning curve is steep, but I think that these days it is good to have some technical knowledge.

Nothing wrong with that

Very true.

Hooray! And you are in luck, because I just finished this Newbie’s Guide to CachyOS during the weekend, which should help you with your first steps.

That is a very valid insight! Congrats on that! Not everybody has the courage to admit this publicly.

I noticed that AI advice isn’t often that good

another very valid insight that cannot come early enough.

it replied “you are absolutely right…”

That is what they do: lead you on thin ice, let you break in and then tell you “yes, you are right, you are currently freezing to death. How may I assist you next?”

The learning curve is steep, but I think that these days it is good to have some technical knowledge.

That’s the spirit :+1:

This can be pretty tricky and fragile when done on the same hard disk. Better install them both on separate drives. I managed to kill my Windows installation with this and it never revovered. Good riddance, I say.

This can be pretty tricky and fragile when done on the same hard disk.

Unfortunately, I have only one drive, and with current prices, I won’t buy a new one until they get cheaper.

I followed these steps:

  1. Created partitions only for W11 and its system files during its intallation.
  2. Disabled secure boot
  3. Installed CachyOS on a separate partitions: /boot (fat32), and / (btrfs)
  4. Re-enabled secure boot after following the steps in CachyOS wiki.

So the boot partition isn’t shared between W11 and Cachy. I read that this should prevent W11 from messing it when it updates. So far so good, I was wondering what could go wrong in this setup since you said it could be fragile?

The original issue reported in this thread (RTX 5070 Ti frequent system crashes) hasn’t occurred yet. Likely, the problem was caused by me, unless its nature is intermittent. Will test more and find out.

There was one issue that I experienced with the previous setup - instant wake after suspend - I managed to fix it with this guide: Fixing instant wake from suspend on Gigabyte motherboards on Arch Linux . I have the Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite AX V2 rev. 1.1 motherboard.

Hooray! And you are in luck, because I just finished this Newbie’s Guide to CachyOS during the weekend, which should help you with your first steps.

Amazing! Thanks a lot for that!

If only I knew. I had a very similar setup, dual-booting TuxedoOS and Win10, and it actually worked for ~4 weeks. But one morning, the laptop booted into a Windows Boot Manager instead of GRUB, saying something about “Repairing System” and from that moment on, Windows could never boot again. It just gave me an “Windows is defect” message and offered to repair it, but it was never able to recover.

I see. Hopefully, that won’t be the case with my setup. Since, I’ve spent a lot of time re-installing everything from scratch, I will leave it as it is, and hope for the best.
