Problems with Installation

HI there,

I am a longterm linux user and I just don’t get what is happening during my installation. I have now 5 times installed the latest version via USB stick (Legacy, secure boot off) on my Dell XPS 15, but I never get a bootable system. Installation runs through without problem. Followed excatly this link: How To Install CachyOS & Partition Guide | CachyOS for “delete drive” and manual partitioning as GPT…

I have double and triple checked, that I exatly followed the syste

Any tips from anyone about this behavior? I just don’t get what I’m doing wrong

Thanks and best regards,
Oliver

One issue you could possible be facing is the current 6.11 kernel. Seems to be causing a lot of people with installed systems to get to their desktop. I can’t speak to others but I just attempted a RebornOS install and selected everything I normally do and it more than once just sat at plymouth loading. There are some saying there is a Ventoy issue, but I’m apt to think it’s the kernel. I’ll take another look at the one thread about Ventoy and see if they end up not being able to boot their ISO’s or if their issue happens after they do their install.

Well, might be, but to have a kernel issue, the system must first come to the situation to boot into the kernel. But this doesn’t happen, it not even just starts the bootloader, as if it doesn’t exist. It looks like as if I have a boot partition in fat32 with a GPT scheme, but there’s nothing on it - I don’t even get any infos from systemd-boot or grub for that matter. My Laptop does not boot into anything, it not even boots, but starts the Dell Diagnostics. So you might be right, but at this stage, the kernel is not involved, there seems to be something wrong with the partition or installation proecss in my case. BTW, this is my first touch with CachyOS.

What do you think?

I added a post to the one thread to get specifics on what’s going on. That said do you only have CachyOs or are you attempting to dual boot? Would be helpful if you would boot into the live environment and post your inxi -F from Konsole.

Okay, sure, but what do you mean by you added a post int the one thread? I can‘t post anything, since I have no system to boot into. It‘s a single boot Laptop. But I can give you all information you want. What do you mean by book into the Live environment. Can I read about that somewhere?

Oh, you mean, start from USB and post that info? Will do….one moment.

Thanks!

Interesting, before I always booted via Legacy Boot Device support with secure boot off. Now I tried UEFI boot system with secure boot off and started the install and now for the first time ever, it asked me, which boot loader I would like to use. Haven’t seen this question before. Install is running now for the sixth time, hopefully with a different result

And there we go, it booted…now we are talking. So, if it is not documented, it might be worth taking a look, if the installation actually works as expected when booting via Legacy boot protocols.

Now on Uefi with secure boot off, it worked like a charm.

Case closed!
Thanks
Oliver

YES it does.

can’t imagine what went wrong at yours,
here the install ran fine and successful

I don‘t know either, might just have been me;-)

probably

but only now I see in your first posting the following

does this mean you disabled CSM (legacy-support) in BIOS ?

I can see what most likely happened most likely the drive was setup using a GPT partition table which is UEFI only hence why it would in install properly using Legacy.

No, I wrote the iso Image with etcher and thought, I had to use Legacy which means Secure boot off per default. So it was on during the first 5 Installation attempts  So I guess, I didn‘t read the Most important Parts of the Wiki….

As written, Legacy booting the Live USB did never go well, all installations failed. Only after switching the bios to UEFI with secure boot to off, it worked.

@OlliE okay, I understand :grinning:

to install cachyOS on legacy-mode is possible, also when running a GPT.
If you’re interested I would show you how

Might want to create yourself a Ventoy key for use in the future.

Thanks Both, I will See for that.
