Gamescope does not allow HDR under plasma 6.5, reverting to 6.4 fixes issue. Confirmed with others on r/linux_gaming. Wayland can be forced but some games need Gamescope as Wayland doesnt always render HDR properly.
I don’t use Gamescope but the HDR works fine on Wayland on my system.
I’m aware that Wayland still works, I noted that. But Wayland does not look good in some games still and we need gamescope as a workaround. This isn’t just me I’ve seen multiple posts on reddit with the same issue. 2 games in particular you can test yourself at KCD2 and No Man’s Sky. Both way brighter than they should be under Wayland. This is with HDR calibrated and using correct 203 reference luminance for my 1000 nits peak.
It looks fine to me and I have tested it in several games: RE4, RE2, HZD, HZD Remastered, Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, TLOU, TLOU 2, God of War, Elden Ring, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to name a few. I frequent reddit and don’t see people reporting issues with HDR other than commands to get it to work.
Yes you listed games that it works well in. I have only found 2 games so far being KCD2 and No Man’s Sky. Have you tried either of those games specifically? Just because you haven’t seen it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist lol. From the few posts iv seen it has to do with Wayland HDR format and how the games HDR is implemented. For these games, gamescope fixes it. If there were no issues I wouldn’t see any differences between Wayland and gamescope.
I installed No Mans Sky and it looks ok to me in Wayland even though it uses scRGB. I had an issue with Cyberpunk’s scRGB being overexposed back in the day and will have to revisit it and see if that is the case now. I tried running No Mans Sky with Gamescope and could not even get it to run. What launch options are you using?
Yes No Mans Sky is also overexposed and iv used every launch option iv ever used and worked. As i said game scope is broken rn under KDE 6.5. Gamescope fixes over exposed scrgb HDR games. Most of the time. KCD2 uses rec709 and also looks almost overexposed. Can be mostly fixed by really lowering HDR white reference in KDE calibration but never completely. Gamescope fixes this one as well. Really irritating that any time i mention HDR problems its looked at as a ME thing when i can clearly compare HDR scenes to a calibrated W11 scene and see that KDE is lacking in contrast and tone mapping. Can boot right into W11 and not have to mess with a reference white value and get amazing picture.
Fired up Cyberpunk and now the scRGB looks fine now. I had to do some adjustments because the settings were set for HDR10 to dial it in. I have not played Cyberpunk until late last year and scRGB was definitely not working properly then. In both games, the colors are not over exposed and are rich so there was not a saturation issue. Usually, a good reference for me to do is to look at the clouds and sun to see if it is overexposed or overblown. In No Mans Sky, the planet I was on, the cloud detail was there, and the sun was distinctly round and bright but not overblown. This is on a 4090 and a PG32UCDM monitor. I am sorry you are having these issues. It’s gotta suck. I remember trying to get HDR to work in Proton back in the day with Nvidia when I didn’t know about the Vulkan HDR Layer thing. Talk about frustrating.
Nvidia just added the Vulkan HDR metadata extension to their beta branch. Hopefully here soon we won’t have to use the layer hack anymore, which is not supposed to be color accurate.
i have the same Problem with AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT but my Games are Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator
