I’d like to request that the Jellyfin Media Player be added to the CatchyOS repository. I was using it through AUR, but recent updates have broken the AUR version for me and my troubleshooting has been… unsuccessful, lol. Additionally, the only Jellyfin compatible media player that I’ve been able to find in the repository is Delfin, which while technically functional is extremely bare bones and lacks much of the functionality of the official media player, such as sorting, playlist management options, and the like.
While not exactly the same you can use Jellyfin MPV Shim that is in the extra repos of arch. With this you basically browse Jellyfin on your browser and when you hit play it will use the MPV you have installed locally in Cachy to reproduce the media. All the functionality to my knowledge is there (even the unofficial skip intro plugin works). It also allows you to do further customization like using upscalers (haven’t tested it myself) and overall since you have the player itself locally you can play around with it more.
Thanks for the info! I’ll definitely look into that if need be, but I still would personally prefer that the desktop media player for the project was available from the catchyos repository, so I’m not gonna mark it as a solution. Please don’t take that as me not appreciating the backup option, as I definitely do!
for about a week and a half it’s failed to launch on two separate systems of mine with different hardware, one of which is a very minimalistic build with almost nothing installed in it I basically just use for web browsing and watching media. I’ve attempted updates/rebuilds with no luck on both, and my vpn app (also aur) also stopped working at the same time on both, so it’s apparently something that changed in catchy recently. My hope is that if there was a native version that was precompiled for the OS it would be less likely to break due to OS changes. Not asking about the vpn software because it’s a weird pre-compiled blob and I just moved to saving a few openvpn configs to the network manager. Also though, just generally I feel like the overlap between Linux users and people with a Jellyfin server is pretty big, as seen by the fact that there’s already a 3rd party client in the catchy repository, and I just think it makes sense for it to be offered. shrug.
Yeah, I should get a flat hub client running on my machine I know. Haven’t wanted to bother because the AUR has basically everything and I’d rather not deal with managing flat pack permissions and things when I’m not currently trying to sandbox my applications. There’s a reason I’m no longer using Bazzite, lol. Thanks for letting me know that there’s a functional flat pak available though, I’ll look into it.
If a handful of foreign (AUR) packages all break after updates my first thought is that it is the classic “system libraries have updated” and thus “foreign packages require a rebuild against current libraries”.
Any foreign software not precompiled or containerized will experience this from time to time and its just normal procedure to rebuild them.
If you are saying the rebuild does not help then I guess it may be something else.
But we still do not know the substance of the error.
Another common part of dealing with AUR packages is observing the package page and comments there .. have you checked those? ex;
( Which is still AUR rebuilds needed .. but as some are dependencies of, but not themselves jellyfin-media-player, they may have been overlooked.)
FWIW, I was able to build and run Jellyfin Desktop (the new name for Jellyfin Media Player) using the pkgbuild from AUR: AUR (en) - jellyfin-desktop at 2.0.0-2
Install went fine for me, and logging in and navigating but playback goes straight into seizure-mode flashing white/black in a strobe-like manner. Audio plays, interface still works (can click back) but it’s unbearable.
