Lenovo Ideapad S340-15API - fan not working

I’m new to Linux, and so far I’m really liking CachyOS. But I have one issue - and it’s a big one.

Short version; the cooling fan isn’t working. I’ve attempted to Google the issue and tried a few things without success.

  1. ExtremeCooling4Linux - didn’t seem to do anything.
  2. CoolerControl - shows the temps, but no fan information.
  3. System monitor also shows GPU pegged at 100% - but I’m not sure if it actually is.
  4. Changed the BIOS setting to performance mode - no difference.
  5. I believe the BIOS is outdated, but unable to work out how to upgrade it while running Linux. I went on a side-quest of fwupd - but that said no updates found.

I’ve no idea what to try next. The laptop gets hot, thermal throttles, lags and is unusable.
Any help would be appreciated.
I’m not sure what details will help;

Hello and welcome,

System info along with some logs and such can be shared with the link from;

sudo cachyos-bugreport.sh

Hopefully that works;

Ah well I do notice (if my search-foo is accurate) that you have some BIOS updates available.

I do - but I haven’t found a way of doing it. I went on a sidequest of attempting this with fwupdmgr but had no luck.
Perhaps I need to return to Windows for this device?

If necessary you can use a PE/Clone like Hirens to do something like update the BIOS.
