Laptop's Intel integrated audio stop working after linux-firmware updates

Hello there!

My laptop’s integrated audio stopped working, I can only assume after the subsequent updates of linux-firmware, linux-firmware-intel etc. Updated to 20251111 and next day or something like that to 20251125 and some days, after my audio already not working 20251125-2.

I search the web and one old post on arch forums said that with Secureboot enabled, many changes could cause problems. As I already saw many reports over the years about problems with secureboot and there is no problem to me to disable it, I disable it and the audio came back… but no long after the last update it is not working in anyway anymore. Not even now with kernel 6.18. I also tried the CachyOS’s LTS kernel 6.12 and it still not working. Also tried reinstalling the firmware packages; tried the snapshot of two days before the day I noticed and couldn’t even boot to it.

I also saw some reports of updating the UEFI/BIOS solved the problem. As my Laptop doesn’t have any updates, last one was in 2023. I tried to reload factory defaults; re-enable secureboot; disable it again, but nothing brought my sound back.

Does audio work using a live boot session-Cachy or even another distro?

Not anymore. Worked with Bazzite, Fedora 43 (KDE and Workstation) that I have installed on external drives.

[Edit]

To clarify, not working anymore in any live media or installed version I have lying around in USB drives. But seems to be detected by all.

KDE? If so, under “System Settings → Sound” have you tried changing the profile to Pro Audio or something other than the current default? Also, check you sound options under “aslamixer” by using f6 to select your sound card. Your system may have defaulted to an unexpected output.

Did that already. It just adds 3 pro audio option to choose from, none work and there is no entry for mic.

It seems that for some it’s working again with the new kernel 6.17.5 and probaly the new -linux-firmware* (20260110-1) files, but not on my system. Very worrying

Mine still not working

does this fix it for you?

Using the 1,0 it disables it completely. with 0,1 it appeared as it was already appearing as Pro Audio entries. Switching to Discreet graphics it appeared, but only for the output, no input work for 5 seconds in a very low volume even the volume being over 100%, and it’s gone again.

I’ll keep testing, but today my integrated audio appeared again, including the input and it’s working. I’ll monitor it to check if it’ll keep consistently working.

I don’t recall the updates downloaded this past days, but one thing that I did is stop using my USB-C port with my USB-C to HDMI cable since I found my extra cables to use in the HDMI port. I used it just bit over a week.

other people seem to be working through the same or similar issue here.
A user notes they have determined there to be conflicting drivers and blacklisting one (which one) has got their audio working again.

Mine already stopped working again in March 4th, few days after I posted. And still not working since. During this time I installed CachyOS from scratch to have the 4GB boot partition, so it’s a new installation too.

still not working? you can post a cachos-bugreport.sh

Sorry for the huge delay
