[KDE Plasma] - Is KDE Team Dropping Support For X11 In Upcoming KDE Plasma Version 6.8?

Hi,

Running CachyOS KDE Plasma x86_64 on three computers.
Is X11 support being dropped in upcoming KDE Plasma version 6.8 ?

Wayland is good, but issues need to resolved before X11 is dropped.

Well, that is most unfortunate…

The biggest issue we are facing is that current NoMachine remote desktop application
is broken with current Wayland.

Other people here probably have their own issues with Wayland as it stands.

Personally speaking, I made the switch to Wayland without being aware of it when I switched from Mint/Cinnamon to Arch/KDE Plasma two years ago. It wasn’t until about 3-4 months later that I became aware that I’d switched. That told me all I needed to know.

As for that 5% of Plasma users who still use X11, though I suspect that the number that need to use it is less than that, there are still some actively developed desktop environments and window managers that still support it. It’s just hard to blame KDE, or any open source project with intense funding constraints, to continue to develop for and support an outgoing, near obsolete standard that has already dropped down to 5% and will only continue to decline. Resources are just better used elsewhere.

Luckily for those people that still need it, for whatever reason, alternatives still exist. Hopefully, by the time that alternatives no longer exist there will no longer be any need for anyone to still need X11.

If i remember correctly, Virtualbox is not working with Wayland (at least I had to switch to X11 on TuxedoOs with kde plasma), so that might be a real bummer…

I see it as an incentive for people that have been sitting on legacy applications to either look for new solutions or for the developers supporting those applications to get off their keisters and fix things. The wayland migration has only been going on for 10 to 15 years, geez.

VirtualBox works on my end with CachyOS KDE Plasma Wayland.

So which DEs do we still have for X11? Xfce, cinnamon?

Have a look at this, might be interesting if you want to stick with Plasma. I have my own issues with Wayland, nothing major, just annoying when it come to my workflow.
