HDCP Struggle with Magenta

I recently tried out MagentaTV 2.0 on CachyOS. MagentaTV is the television and streaming service offered by Deutsche Telekom, Germany’s largest telecommunications company.

The “Smart TV Option” of MagentaTV 2.0 supports streaming via browsers, but none of the browsers I tested under Linux worked: Firefox, Chrome, Chromium, and Edge. I only received the following message:

“Error message: Playback is not possible due to an HDCP issue”

The CachyOS installation is pretty much default: KDE Plasma, an Intel CPU, an Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU, the Nvidia driver installed, and the TV connected via HDMI.

To make sure it was not hardware-related, I tried opening the same stream on Windows 11 using various browsers on the same hardware. Initially, Windows showed the same HDCP error without the official Nvidia driver installed. However, after installing the Nvidia driver, the stream worked perfectly in all tested browsers.

Any hints on how to make this work under CachyOS would be appreciated.

For copyrighted stuff you need widevine. It depends on the browser. In Brave it’s just a switch under Settings → Extensions. For chromium you need the package chromium-widevine from the AUR or chaotic-aur. In Firefox you have to enable the DRM protected content switch, it will then download the widevine stuff.
