GranBlue Fantasy:Relink / Vulkan games crashing with VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST

System:

  • CachyOS x86_64, KDE Plasma 6.6.4, Wayland

  • AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, EVGA RTX 2080 SUPER XC Ultra

  • NVIDIA driver 595.71.05

  • Kernel: linux-cachyos 7.0.5-2

Issue: After updating from 7.0.5-1 to 7.0.5-2 today, Granblue Fantasy Relink freezes mid-gameplay under Proton. Audio continues but frames lock up. DXVK log shows VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST on command submission. Tested with Proton-CachyOS, GE-Proton, and DW Proton — all affected.

On 7.0.5-1, the game was stable for multiple quests with the GPU clock pinned to 1800MHz via nvidia-smi -lgc 1800,1800. After updating to 7.0.5-2 the crashes resumed despite the clock lock still being active.

To be clear: I was poking around my logs and trying to prevent potential SW_POWER_CAP or Thermal Throttling that I was seeing on LACT graphs while playing. My card was never actually drawing the power cap of 250W, closest it got was ~230W. However I was thermal throttling with a hotspot of ~96C. Pinning my GPU MHz to 1800 helped keep temps lower, stopped the frame lockup and provided a stable gaming session yesterday, but despite that the frame lockup returned today with VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST.
Seemingly only happening with GBF:R as I’ve played Dead as Disco just fine yesterday, and was able to play some Crimson Desert without any critical issues.

I’m fairly new to the linux environment, so please let me know if I’ve failed to provide important information regarding the issue. Noticed there are also other reports for other games with similar errors on other games posted recently.

So, looks like it might be related to DXVK shader compilation?
Played a different quest (Quest B) that had 1 of the 2 bosses from the quest (Quest A) that was constantly locking up & logging VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST.
Went back to play quest A after successfully completing Quest B, and finished it also without any issues.

Frames locking up when fighing Gallanza & Maglielle, repeatedly a good half dozen times in a row, tested various things to fix it, nothing worked. Tried fighting Maglielle alone, that didn’t lock up, went back to VS Gallanza & Maglielle and no issues had.
I had similar crashes when trying other fights previously but somehow worked around those with various other fixes.

Did you find a fix yet?
I have the same Error with my RTX 2080ti under Arch Hyprland
