Google-chrome-stable doesn't load or takes forever to load

I’m having a problem with Chromium based browsers “Chrome, Brave.” It does the same thing in Arch. I’m running the Nvidia drivers. If anyone can help out that would be great.

When I launch google-chrome-stable I get this message in the console:

google-chrome-stable

Hello and welcome,

Do you mean the package google-chrome-stable ?

If so I am sorry to say that google-chrome-stable was found to be a malicious PKGBUILD.

From a quick news article to summarize the situation;

It was removed almost immediately after upload so you must have gotten it quite fast.

I suggest you begin considering your system compromised.

I do not yet have full details as to how serious it may be or what next steps to take.

If you did/do not have the package google-chrome-stable installed then you may ignore the above.

( Double check: pacman -Qs google-chrome-stable and/or grep 'google-chrome-stable' /var/log/pacman.log )

Allegedly it’s a RAT (Remote Access Trojan), so it may have control over the machine with the possibility to install software, steal data and spy on the user.

Conclusion? Consequence? The only secure way is to reinstall, right?

The conclusion is if you, at any point, installed any of the following;

  • librewolf-fix-bin
  • firefox-patch-bin
  • zen-browser-patched-bin
  • google-chrome-stable

Then you should consider your system compromised.

Without access to the payload or a detailed analysis it would be difficult to say a lot more.
But due to the nature of these malwares it is highly unlikely that any definitions-based antivirus will be much help. And to my knowledge no such software purports to have any kind of detection for these specific RATs (Remote Access Trojans). That is as far as I know a tool like ClamAV is not sufficient, and probably will not be in the future either.

Yes, unless or until there is better information or verifiable removal/recovery procedures the best I can suggest is to simply wipe and start over.

Heres a virustotal reading that has been attached, but its not exceedingly useful.
