Freezes with intensive games

Hi. I’ve been recently having trouble with intensive games freezing, which started a few days ago. It started with games like cyberpunk (via heroic), not even making it to the main menu. I’ve tried different versions of proton (cachy-slr / GE / experimental ) with no change. Again, I tried the trench lord demo on steam, and it stutters as it gets to the main menu, and then freezes. I booted in to windows 10 (shudder) and the same demo loaded fine.

I have a suspicion this started around the KDE 6.7 update, but that may be a coincidence.

CPU temperature seems to be getting high too.

I’m not sure how to diagnose this one, so any help would be appreciated.

Using nvidia-580xx-dkms 580.159.04-2 driver.

To add, audio continues playing, whilst the graphics freeze. Older and less intensive games run fine (so, bataman arkam city, disco elysium, citizen sleeper (heroic)). For some reason, 40k rouge trader (steam) stutters and freezes at main menu, even though there’s no real graphic use.

To get out of this, I change tty (so ctrl+alt+f3) and force a restart, with ctrl+alt+del. The terminal itself doesn’t show.

I just can’t figure out what has changed to cause this. :man_shrugging:

As a last attempt to get some help, I was patient and tty3 showed up, and I could log in. btop showed the process was idling at about 2%. Switching back to kde worked once, but a second time, it stuttered and froze. So, GPU maybe? Odd, as it works in windows.

I used to have this or a similar issue years ago on Ubuntu with older version of nvidia drivers and IIRC it is a recurring one. Check the logs then try searching the net and nvidia forums for the error/solution.

Are you passing some launch options to the game, like trying to use Wayland directly without XWayland? Have you tried LTS kernel?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, as it’s an old card, I’m using the 580xx drivers ( 580.159.04-2 ). I’ve not had a problem with them, until now. I’ve tried LTS, and it’s the same problem. I’m not passing anything to the launcher.

I’ll see what I can find on the nvidia side of things. Which logs should I check?

More info.

journalctl | grep nvidia

gives:

kernel: [drm:nv_drm_atomic_commit [nvidia_drm]] *ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00000100] Flip event timeout on head 0
kwin_wayland[976]: Pageflip timed out! This is a bug in the nvidia-drm kernel driver
kwin_wayland[976]: Please report this at https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/c/gpu-graphics/linux

and

kernel: nvidia-modeset: ERROR: GPU:0: Idling display engine timed out: 0x0000927c:3:0:1264

And some searching, led to this thread on the CachyOS forums:

https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/hard-freezes-under-kde-pageflip-timed-out/28325/2

Suggesting it may be a kwin / nvidia problem, which might match up with my thought it was the latest KDE update that has caused this.

After plenty of testing, it seems that the games I’ve had trouble with, are directx12. 11 and lower, all seem to work.
