Display not recognised - low resolution

I’m having a problem with setting the resolution of one of my monitors on a fresh install. I have a nvidia GTX 1080 and the problem happens when the monitor is connected to either HDMI or DisplayPort outputs (DVI works fine). The monitor in question shows as ‘DP-2-unknown’ or ‘HDMI-2-unknown’ depending on which output it’s connected to. The only available resolutions are 1024x768 and down. The exact same setup works fine on Windows 10.

I’ve tried downgrading my drivers as described in various places. I followed the instructions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/1osj2u7/i_cant_set_my_display_to_the_correct_resolution/ without anything seeming to change.

I’ve tried using xrandr, the result of ‘xrandr –newmode’ is ‘Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)’. So far as I can tell I carried it out correctly.

I’m sure I’m missing something obvious or that I made a mistake somewhere.

I’d be grateful for any help.

I suspect it’s rather a driver problem. You could try switching your Acer monitor to HDMI, and keep the one that works with DVI on DVI. (You are not using any adaptors? From my own experience, they could mess the communication too.)

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately it doesn’t work on HDMI either. I agree it looks like a driver problem, but since I’m new to Linux I don’t know what to do beyond what I’ve already tried.
