Current Status and Recommendations for Nvidia Drivers on CachyOS with RTX 3060 Ti

I’ve been using CachyOS on my PC for about nine months, primarily for video editing in DaVinci Resolve Studio. My setup includes an RTX Nvidia 3060 Ti, and I’m running the KDE desktop environment. During installation, I opted for the default Nvidia driver installation, and everything has been working smoothly.

However, I’m curious about the current state of Nvidia drivers on CachyOS.

As I understand it, there are two versions of Nvidia drivers available: the official Nvidia drivers and an open-source version.

Given this, what would you recommend? Should I stick with the current setup, or should I consider switching to the open-source drivers?

There is simply no difference between the open and closed module. (mostly)

The open module has an open source license, and utilizes the GSP Firmware to talk to the “windows” driver (windows and linux driver share a lot each other)

Since the 555 Driver the GSP Firmware got as default enabled too, at the closed source module. If you dont explicitly disable it, then there would be mostly only the licensing difference.

NVIDIA will likely forward in not making much testing anymore for the closed source module, and according their blog post blackwell (upcoming architecture) will not support the closed source driver anymore, therefore I think the closed module will be “legacy” at some point.

But thats just my speculations.

I am glad for the detailed explanation.

Given what you’ve mentioned about the future direction of Nvidia’s driver support, would you recommend switching to the open-source driver now, or is it better to continue using the closed-source driver?
Specifically, I’m concerned about maintaining stability and performance for video editing in DaVinci Resolve Studio on my RTX 3060 Ti.

Additionally, I plan to try gaming on this same device using Steam, so I’d like to factor that into the decision as well.

Any advice on the timing or potential benefits of making the switch, considering both video editing and gaming, would be greatly appreciated.

I am also using a 3060 Ti and my gaming experience has been flawless with the open source module on the newest 560.35.03 driver, even though I must say I do not notice a big difference between this and the 555 driver.
DaVinci Resolve also runs wonderful with no issues at all.

Yes, I do suggest switching to the open module since the closed one will be not much tested yet.

Some users could have issues with the GSP Firmware, but as long not explicitly disabled by the user, this will be also enabled for the closed module.

Guys,
could you write a simple tutorial on how to switch from closed to open drivers?
Which commands I must use?

sudo pacman -Syu linux-cachyos-nvidia-open

Uff… I am totally confused
Because there is some info about nvidia-driver-assistant

What info and where? You lost me

I am glad for your help.
I switched to Open version successfully!
Davinci Resolve Studio 19 works fine as well! :confetti_ball:

Good day. How to switch back to Proprietary driver, please?

I know this is a late reply but i just removed the old ones with pacman -R and installed the proprietary ones with “sudo pacman -Syu linux-cachyos-nvidia” without the open.

For my RTX 3070 in certain games, they gave me a better performance and by performance I mean better FPS stability.

However a lot of the games I play are Early Access so they are problematic on their own (whether it’s Windows or Linux), so yeah.
