Computer freezes when playing some games on Steam

Hello everyone, my name is Pavlina, I am from Prague - Czech republic and this is my first post here.
in recent monsths I have problem, that some games in steam freezes completely my computer so I have to turn it off.
I bought my new computer in summer 2023. I installed Manjaro with XFCE on it and everything went well. In November last year I installed on it EndeavourOS (with XFCE desktop) and some days later I had my first computer freeze when I was playing Pathfinder Wrath of…
I thought it was due to the graphic card drivers, because on Endeavouros everything is much newer then on Manjaro with stable branch updates.
Five days ago I installed CachyOS (and I must say that I love it) over the Endeavoros and the problems with computer freeze are the same. Yesterday I installed new Nvidia drivers - 570 and tested it on Pathfinder and it worked without any problems.
But today, after 5 minuts of playing my computer freeze again. I am runnig kernel 6.13, but the same happens on 6.12 LTS. I am runnig KDE plasma on Nvidia geforce 3070 8GB.
And sorry for my english language

Here is output from inxi:

Driver - 570.86.16 Is in “BETA” right now. So it may have issues at the moment. A lot of stuff going on with Nvidia drivers right now with the new GPU releases. It says your “RTX 3070” is supported by this driver. But being in beta the driver may have bugs they are still working out. I use AMD so I never have to worry about this stuff so I am limited on my knowledge with Nvidia. BUT if there is a way to roll back the driver you could maybe try that or I would personally just wait it out for a little bit until they fix it.

Thanks for your answer A80z, the problem is, that the same problems were also with previous drivers v. 565.77. Maybe this problem has nothing in common with GPU drivers, I dont know. On Manjaro I used grub, on Endeavouros and now on CachyOS I am using systemd.

Update - now I try to install chacyos gaming packages via welcome screen and run Witcher 3 in Steam native and after 5 minutes computer freezed again. So it does not matter if I run games under Steam Runtime or Native.

Thanks for keeping me up to date! Yeah right now I am just running through ideas as I would do with my own PC. We kinda have to run through ideas and hope one sticks on here because we are technically running blind when it comes to helping other people.

Installing the gaming packages was a good thing cause they fix a lot of issues right out of the gate usually. Usually we run Steam Native when possible but trying out runtime was a good idea. Have you read the GAMING page in the wiki? Maybe it has something that will solve the problem.

Also are you running launch commands for each individual game in Steam? Maybe there is a command messing things up. One example, as you can see in the wiki, is most distros use “gamemode” in steam as a launch command but here we use “game-performance” instead. If there is a certain command that you have running in all games maybe taking it out and testing will fix the problem. If not then we move on.

Second thing I can think of is Proton. Have you tried a different version of Proton? Maybe the games you are trying just don’t get along with the Cachy Proton right now. You could try switching to Proton Experimental or one of the others. In order to do this you have two choices.

The first is a global setting for all games. Just go to:

Steam
Settings
Compatibility
Make sure “Enable Steam Play For All Other Titles” is Enabled
Then Choose a Proton Version

The second option is to choose a Proton version on each individual game. This is useful because some games work better with certain versions:

Steam
Library
Right click the game you want to change
Properties
Compatibility
Check “Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool”
Then choose the version of Proton you want to try.

The last thing I can think of is checking out THIS video and then THIS video. I recommend this a lot but the dude knows his stuff and only cares about gaming. Maybe watching those will show that maybe you did something wrong in setting up. Just grasping at straws here.

Keep me up to date. We will just keep throwing out ideas until we find one that works hopefully. This is all trial and error.

Good morning H80z.
thanks for the the links, I read the gaming wiki yesterday, but will go through once again today.
I will test some of the troubled games with different proton versions (Pathfinder Kingmaker is native linux game but I will try it also with the cachyos-proton).
And will watch both youtube videos. I know the first one, but I am most curios about the second one.
Once again, thank you and have a nice Sunday.

Are you having trouble with native Linux games as well? If so that could be a clue that this isn’t compatibility issue at least.

For example Pathfinder Kingmaker which freezes my computer, is native linux game. But the same happens with Pathfinder WOTR, which is not native linux game.
At the same time Baldurs gate 1 + 2 from GOG as well as Divinity OS 1 also from GOG are both native linux games and both seems to work very well.
Maybe the problem is in Steam, but as I wrote in my first post, for one and half year I played both Pathfinder games (spent 140 hours in Kingmaker and 200 in WOTR) under steam in Manjaro, and I had zero problems.
Maybe I should try to update BIOS (I know that there are lots of new versions of BIOS for my motherboard), but honestly, I am afraid of doing this.

You may be on to something with the Steam idea if your other launchers are working. I know you can use “Lutris” to launch games from steam so maybe trying that will tell us whether it is steam or not. I don’t use Lutris though so I have little experience about how to use it. If you installed the CachyOS gaming package it should already be on your system though.

I doubt it would be a BIOS issue and messing with that can be iffy if you don’t know what you are doing. If you are dead set on updating it I could look into exactly what motherboard you have and look into the process for you.

But for right now I think you are on to something about Steam. Definitely if the other launchers work. So I would set up Lutris and try the troubled games from there. If they work great then we know something is up with Steam. If not then we will move on to other ideas.

Are you running any scx scheduler? Please also share the system log as it may contain something useful. journalctl -b 0 | paste-cachyos

I am not sure what scx scheduler is. I will try and post the journal informations right after next computer crash.

Is that the only game, that it is freezing on?

Did you use the same hardware? As for Gigabyte, updating the BIOS, make sure if you do this it is compatible with all your hardware otherwise you will end up with issues in your hardware, which in turn will screw up your software.

I had issues with PAthfinder Kingmaker, Pathfinder WOTR and Witcher 3 (all on steam). Baldurs gate 1 + 2 and Divinity OS enhanced edition (all from GOG) seem to be working pretty well. Also Dragon age and Wasteland 2 (both on steam) seems to be running without any problems.

As an update, yesterday I played Pathf. Kingmaker without any problems. And today I spent in this game cca 45 minutes also without any problems.

So all of the games are fine now on Steam or just Pathfinder? If they work now it is mostly likely what I said at the beginning. A lot of stuff going on with the drivers right now with the new GPU driver releases. So things are slowly getting updated and fixed. Still odd the only problem was with games on Steam but if its fixed that’s good enough lol. Could also have been a update needed on Steams end.

Pathfinder Kingmaker seems to be now working without any problems (at least for last three days). I dont know why (I installed the gaming meta packade, I am now using Steam native and I made several changes according to Cachyos wiki and this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vg7uclIuETQ).
What is important is, that it is working. I hope that it will continue this way

Thank you all for your advices.

No problem! Hope all is well now. If anything goes wrong just let me know and we will start looking for solutions again.

Have a good one!
