Hello and welcome,

To answer the title question

No.
i686 is a 32-bit architecture.
You will need a 64-bit capable CPU in order to use CachyOS.

But

This is not an i686 processor.

You can run cachy with this hardware.
Though it is quite old and unlikely to derive any of the optimization benefits such as those provided by the v3/v4 repositories.

Yes!

It’s a 64-bit processor, https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/65697/intel-core-i33217u-processor-3m-cache-1-80-ghz/specifications.html

I’m running a much older Haswell i5 4690 with CachyOS XFCE and it runs just fine.

Thank you @ponder for the helpful reply.
I’ll go ahead & replace Ubuntu 16.04 with Cachy OS.

Original 5 day old answer not good enough somehow? :crying_cat:

Or just about anything.
Ubuntu 16.04 reached EOL (end of life) in 2021.
Even if it was on the special super long term HWE support .. the most up to date version reached EOL over one year ago.

Probably going to be a flood of new-to-you software versions too. :dizzy:

Hi @cscs

Our School uses 3 Applications, that are built with Python 2.7
So, we’re still running Ubuntu 16.04, but through put/performance is getting slower with every passing day.

Hence, was looking for Cachy OS.

By the way, I got confidence from words of @ponder.

Me clicking on solution button was … Let me change it..
Absolutely nothing against the first reply…
Thank you very much for having patience to answer rank-newbie’s.

It is very very good-enough.

It was all light-hearted (hence the abundance of emojis). :+1:

At last, I did install Cachy OS on 2 machines

  1. the Intel i3 Processor one, I had requested help for
  2. the Intel i7 Processor one, which had the targetted architecture

@cscs @ponder I couldn’t see any visible gains in my heavier usage

  1. editing 4K video’s which run into 2-3 GB
