Cachyos experience and errors in half a year

I apologize if there are any mistakes, as I am Russian and translate with the help of a translator (DeepL) into English.

I just wanted to share my experience of using CachyOS distribution: I have been using this distribution for about half a year now (since January 15, 2024) and I have had mostly very positive experience. However, during this time I have installed many programs and tested different settings and consequently crashed the system many times, but I recovered it with Btrfs snapshots, which by the way I did not recover with your Snapper and so I use Timeshift instead.

On the positive side I can say that it works fast, updates frequently, has a large list of programs, and if something is missing you can find it in Aur or Flatpuk. A lot of different settings so you can customize everything for yourself (or degrade and bloat as it turned out for me). Games in Proton work great, etc. You guys are great great distro except that I’m kind of a tech savvy user, but I’m constantly causing problems for myself.

Well I also have some problems that I probably won’t fix but just reinstall the system with the new July ISO image.
In games (roughly speaking under high load) does not work normally FreeSync (Gsync compatible), there is a blinking screen, that is, the monitor works, and then bang and went out, but immediately recovered and shows again, but after some time for example in a complex scene again occurs. When disabling this function this blinking disappears, but it is interesting that I do not notice screen tearing (Tearing) regardless of whether the FreeSync function is enabled or disabled (I can not customize it in any way standard ways, only enable or disable. In the monitor itself or in the Nvidia driver settings). I assumed that this is related to LFC (Low Frame Rate Compensation) because if the FPS is too low, the refresh rate of the monitor becomes higher than this FPS and possibly crosses the boundary of the monitor’s capabilities and the monitor can not display the image with such a high refresh rate.

And also there are punctures with other functions like VRB, HDR, etc. when they should not work together, but a couple of times I managed to run VRB, for example, together with FreeSync and it’s not even know how to call it - a light show. And also HDR which can be activated in KDE Plasma does not work, it makes the picture too white so it is not possible to use only distorts the image. And also I have an 8 bit monitor + FRC (FRC only works at 120 hertz and below due to bandwidth limitations in Display Port 1.2) I tried to find it and turn it on somewhere but no way to get it maybe FRC just doesn’t work on Linux.

Also during installation my Blody P91 pro mouse can’t work properly, it sometimes doesn’t respond when moving slowly for example, but I somehow fix it by downloading additional packages like A4tech-blody-driver-git.
And it also happens that if when I pull the flash drive out of the PC without using safe extraction, the last recorded data is not saved or the file system crashes at all such was more than once on SSD disk and had to connect the disk to a laptop with Windows to fix this error.

And there was also a problem in Brave browser (and not only in it) when on my LCD screen there was a residual image of the site that was broadcast over the current one - like a very long burn-in on OLED, that is, the image was shaking or something, and I was like - what is it? I minimized the browser or just went to another tab and there it was. I closed the browser - didn’t help, turned off and on the monitor - didn’t help, rebooted the pc, and there it was even on the UEFI boot screen, and it disappeared only after a few minutes, and it helped to disable hardware acceleration in the browser, but I think it once appeared in the FreeTube program, and now I haven’t noticed it for a long time, apparently it was fixed maybe with updates.

And also on Wayland performance is much lower than on X11, that is for example: in X11 - 114 FPS, and in Wayland 70. And it is connected with ICC profile in KDE plasma because when you disable it the performance increases immediately, but it is still lower than on X11, for example 95 FPS instead of 114. And it happened that X11 or Wayland session crashed and threw me to SSDM.

And also it seems that Cpupower is not working properly, I have configured it to set a profile at boot in which the performance and minimum CPU frequency for all 4 cores is set to 3600 MHZ (Minimum 800 MHZ, maximum 3600 MHZ). But it does not apply this profile at boot and I get at boot: Energy preference - performance, Governor policy - powersave, minimum frequency 800 MHZ, maximum 3600 MHZ. And I don’t see any difference when I set my profile in cpupower-gui where power settings are set to performance, and the frequency should be stable at 3600, because the frequency jumps constantly every second from 3200 to 3600 and all cores are different, and sometimes falls to 800. At the same time in the game it is set at 3300 for all cores and stops jumping.
And also I don’t have KDE Connect working as I haven’t tried it, I can’t see the phone and the same thing in BLUETOOTH, but later I found out that my motherboard doesn’t seem to have BLUETOOTH and Wi-FI. And also my old microphone works, but even at maximum volume is very quiet sound and words are swallowed that is not stable, but a lot of crackle, but before the same microphone when I still had Windows worked perfectly and loudly, maybe it is in it.

Another funny thing is possible with KDE Plasma that I can unload in “working mode” and “Hang/Lag mode”, that is, I start the pc, well, there enter passwords from UEFI, from LUKS, unload in Grub, then Systemd, and then when I go into the system I have: 1 the system does not react, that is, even the time does not change, but the cursor moves, and sometimes reacts you can do something, but then again hangs, and also sometimes shows a file system error. As a result I have to forcibly reboot and try to catch a “working” system, and I can’t restart or shut down because plasmashell closes, and then a dark screen with a cursor and a program that I opened for example CachyOs-Hello and I have to forcibly hold the power button for 5 seconds and thus shut down. And the 2nd variant is when the system is normally booted and works as usual, that is, reacts, though there are rare short-term hangs, but they are more likely associated with just a high load of the system or something like that.

Also I notice that CachyOS-browser is updated faster than LibreWolf, i.e. the new LibreWolf build has not been released yet, and your browser is already updated apparently from the base of regular Firefox and I think it’s not very good as your browser is based on LibreWolf and should be on its base and because of this, for example, during the update localization of the language is reset, DOH settings on cloudflare, etc.

I would recommend against using cpupower. The kernel should already be doing what ever is needed to ensure the best usage of resources depending on the task being handled. About Hdr and free sync, those problems your describing stem from the fact that the features aren’t exactly fully flushed out yet. It is in the midst of a heavy bug fixing phase. Kde was the first to tackle hdr support, so it may be a fair while before it is usable feature for gaming. Steam is heavily involved in these efforts. They are in my opinion, one of the largest contributors to Kde devs. They have a lot riding on making it all work.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply I appreciate it.
I understand your recommendation not to use cpupower, but when I turned it off I didn’t notice much difference, neither benefit nor harm, because the CPU frequency is still jumping/jumping, but maybe in games the performance will be a little different, but for that you need to get rid of the focus on the video card by lowering the resolution for example.

You are right about HDR and Free Sync. HDR is really in an experimental state in KDE Plasma 6 and so far it distorts the picture on my monitor whether HDR-400 (yes I know HDR-400 is not real HDR) is enabled in the monitor or not. But people use it not only for gaming, but also for viewing HDR content, although most content now continues to be shot in 8 bit, limited, sRGB.

And about Free Sync there is something wrong here, because it seems to be present since Linux kernel version 6.5, but maybe it’s not in the kernel. By the way it is strange that my monitor (Acer-nitro-xv272upbmiiprzx) has the usual Free Sync, but in fact I have LFC (Low Frame Rate Compensation, because of which most likely there are problems, but this is just an assumption) because, that the refresh rate of the monitor at low FPS can double or even more increase that is apparently one frame is shown several times, and also it works with HDR enabled - And all this corresponds not to Free Sync, but Free Sync premium pro (you can see the specs on the Internet).

Yes you are right Steam is very much involved in this especially because of their Steam Deck. :slightly_smiling_face:

Now I additionally did two more times “sudo cachyos-bugreport.sh” maybe they will show something, but maybe not, because I don’t know if multiple bugreports are useful?

1 - 39cfb09 - I made it in the mode when the system boots in lag/hang mode.

2 - 07a02de - I made it in “working” mode, but in Wayland (all others were in X11).
