Cachy Package Manager

It’s my undestanding that Cachy is using Shelly as the new update manager.

Why is it then that Cachy-Update is still showing on my taskbar?

Also, should I use Shelly as the new package manager or something else?

I don’t care for the default package manager.

Thanks,

Use what you like, but do understand the most supported options are command-line (ie pacman, paru, and yay). Your mileage with any other options may vary. Shelly is certainly the newest option.

It’s linux, delete or install whatever you want to.

Very true! People are no longer windoze bound with Linux!

Not to be confused with the yet one other cachy-packageinstaller.
( I do not like almost any of the GUI but this is the least complete and possibly among the most likely to fail and/or cause a partial upgrade if it still suggests that to users.. and it do! )

Previous posters are correct though - the system admin is in control.

They may use any of those mentioned here, even the bad ones, or any combination or none. Though I would probably suggest sticking to one.

( Whisper: For GUI my suggestion remains octopi. )

And definitely only run one at a time.

sudo pacman -Syuor paru, which is a wrapper for pacman. Start learning basic commands and you will enjoy the OS more, and you will spend more and more time using the command line for basic and advanced stuff. And then you will see the true power and beauty of linux. well maybe, some people freak out if they can’t click a button.

If and only if I can not locate a package through the terminal, I will use pamac-aur. Otherwise, I stick to the terminal for installing, removing, updating, and upgrading things.

That doesn’t answer my question. I have been using Linux for over 25 years, been a developer for over 15 years and I am fluent in Python and using the terminal. Not a new user.

Thanks,

What is the question then exactly?

I will try to go through the original line by line;

Not sure what we mean by ‘using’?
Its available in the repos and a choice (maybe even a default choice now?) during install.
None of the GUI things is really a full replacement for the real package manager - pacman.
If you want to use one then which is a choice up to you.
You will not get one force-installed or one force-removed automatically.
( IE - If you currently have cachy-update but not shelly and wish to use shelly .. then install shelly. If you like it better then you can remove any alternatives including cachy-update. )
None is required - I dont have any of them installed. Just pacman and paru.

Maybe see above?
Is it simply that one is installed and the other is not?
Package exchanges will never be forced unless required by some kind of dependency.
None of the GUI package manager applications is a requirement of anything important and none of them are required to use Arch or Cachy.

This was somewhat answered above.
The answer is still that its your choice.
Though if you want my humble opinion - they all have issues that make them unsuitable for general recommendation besides maybe octopi as it is just a wrapper for pacman (and optionally aur-helpers like paru).
So the real serious answer is “no” and “pacman”.

I am not sure we are talking about the same thing.
Which application is this intended to mean?

Shelly is installed and Cachy said it is now the default. I don’t see it loaded anywhere or on the taskbar? The normal Cachy-Update is on the taskbar. My question is why is it there if Shelly is now the default?

Yes, I know the choice is mine and this is a minor issue, not really a problem. I just wanted to know why is all. I can use the terminal with not issues, so as I said no problem.

Thanks,

Have you started it?

Even if it were a hard default included with every new install that still would not mean that something like a service would automatically be downloaded and enabled/started on pre-existing systems. I guess this is probably the main understanding missing.

Thanks, Good to know.

Aloha,

i just installed Shelly. It shows me lots of available updates, even though i had previously done pacman -Syu. Why may that be? Also, how to make sure it uses the CachyOs-repositories?

Is there perhaps a Shelly-Faq or How-to for those of us who want tto switch to it?

Ich habe den neuen Paket Manager ebenfalls installiert, und in einem Video darüber berichtet, ein Kommentar fragte aber nach den Namen, da wohl auch eine Software für Automation diesen neben trägt, könnte das zu Problemen führen?

Its github is close enough and was posted above already;

@cscs Thanks, i was aware of that page.

i wouldn’t call it a FAQ though.

At least not in the context of adapting it to or using it in CachyOS.

Regarding my question about the CachyOs repositories; my guess it that for a new OS installation, they are preset in the installer by the Cachy-Team, no?

But how would i set it up or configure it properly in a running system?
