Booting into black screen on Strix Halo machine

Hi there! I’ve installed CachyOS on my Minisforum MS-S1 Max, which is a new-ish Strix Halo based mini PC. When booting normally, I get a splash screen and then a black screen with a frozen white cursor. I am able to boot using nomodeset from Grub, and do some basic troubleshooting. I figured I might be having driver issues.

❯ sudo dmesg | grep amdgpu | grep -i “probe\|error\|failed”
[ 1.483122] amdgpu 0000:f2:00.0: probe with driver amdgpu failed with error -22

❯ uname -r
6.18.0-rc4-2-cachyos-rc

Hello and welcome,

nomodeset will give you no drivers so it is not a great place to check from if they are working.

This is a release-candidate kernel. Not released yet.
The current regular kernel is 6.17.
Is there a reason to be using an rc kernel and/or was that intentional?

If you could get to a TTY from regular boot or even boot into runlevel3 or similar then that would probably be better and then we could get a link from;

sudo cachyos-bugreport.sh

For TTY or how to boot differently you might see;

It was intentional, although probably misguided on my part.

Running on 6.17.7-5-cachyos now under runlevel 3, I am able to provide a log.

Just a quick update. I reinstalled and chose Cinnamon as my desktop environment instead of KDE Plasma and I’m able to log in without getting stuck at a black screen. I’m guessing it is something specific to KDE Plasma, but I am not sure what exactly.

I switched to Plasma X11 and it worked. I’m just going to stick with that and call it a day.

Give my configuration a try to see if it not only mitigates but improves overall performance
