Black screen upon login after update in a VM

Hello,

Well, very much as the title says - after updating CachyOS installed in a virtual machine (VirtualBox, if it matters) and carrying out the recommended reboot, I am facing a black screen with a responsive cursor and seemingly an active (upper left) hot corner.

Since I looked around for an answer and found something suggesting this might be related to the splash screen and Wayland, I tried to log in with an X11 session. That worked, but then I thought I would go back to Wayland and see if the problem persists. Persist it did, but now when I try to log in with X11, I am spat back out at the login screen (I enter username and password, press enter, and am presented with the enter username/password again).

So that, to summarise, currently I have a black screen in Wayland and cannot login in X11.

Of course, it would be possible to simply delete the VM, but, first, there is no guarantee that this will not happen again in another one, second - worse - no guarantee it will not happen on a “bare metal” installation, and third - one is just curious how to fix things.

Thus, if anyone could suggest a course of action, it would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

This is a known issue in mesa 25.1.1:

Installing vulkan-virtio likely could help

Thanks for the answer. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hopefully not a bit of a silly question, but - how to install, if I cannot start a session?
