Is nvidia-open fully open-source like amd one? i read in reddit that it is not open source or what they are saying. How does it differ from amd open source. And if it open source then why not kernel and mesa provide the driver like they to for amd or they does, but i am not aware.
According to my cursory research, they do.
In practice, however, this statement is only partially true.
Trying to put things simply both nvidia and nvidia-open are direct from nvidia, the open is what nvidia is focusing on and testing with and they intend for this to be the way going forward.
Open: kernel driver = open source, userspace driver = closed source, gsp firmware = closed source.
Closed: well you know, closed.
One key difference when it comes to the user is the closed module allows you to disable the gsp firmware whereas the open you cannot.
I’m advising people not to download anything from the website and instead use Pacman or an AUR wrapper.
Is my statement still valid, or should I discard it?
Edit: This is not a leading question, but really serious.
Yes that’s the preferred method of installation, pacman always.
If the AUR is to be used I highly recommend to view the applications details from the https://aur.archlinux.org/ directly and do some basic checking CachyOS FAQ & Troubleshooting Guide | CachyOS
I know using the AUR helpers are useful for beginners but just basic checking will give people confidence later down the line to be able to modify or create there own PKGBUILDs.
It’s all a learning process
How sweet is that‽
