Optimizing software for games

Hello,
This week i finally got new pc after 17 years :joy: I changed mint to cachy and install gaming packages and CS2. In Steam i enabled compatibility mode with proton-cachyos native package and run the CS2. I got only 25 FPS on 1920-1080 recomended settings? That is the same like my 17 years old pc got on windows on CS.
what can i do to optimize games?

Operating System: CachyOS Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.2.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.10.0
Qt Version: 6.8.1
Kernel Version: 6.13.0-2-cachyos (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 12 Ɨ AMD Ryzen 5 9600X 6-Core Processor
Memory: 30.4 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT
Manufacturer: ASRock
Product Name: B650M PG Lightning

Yeah that seemsā€¦odd. I am running a 6 core, 6650XT, 32gb of ram and I get great performance. First you should go HERE and do what it says under ā€œProvide Logsā€. Then add that to this post. It can help people see exactly what you have and what is going on in the system.

Everything is probably fine and this is most likely a set up or optimization issue. I would check out THIS and do a fresh install with that guide. He only cares about streaming and gaming so he knows how to set up right for that. Then watch THIS he will explain tweaks and settings and what they do.

Lastly I would read THIS to learn anything he may leave out. Honestly I would just read the entire thing. It isnā€™t that long and you will find many useful tips in the wiki.

EDIT: Make sure you listen to what he says and donā€™t just go pushing buttons. lol Some things you may not need and activating them can hurt performance. One example is ā€œbpftuneā€ it helps people with bad connections but can cause issues with people who donā€™t need it. Another thing is ā€œgamemodeā€ a lot of people on other distros use this as a Steam launch command. WELL here on CachyOS we use ā€œgame-performanceā€. He explains all of this in the videos but my point is you should try to really understand what hes saying before you do anything.

Thank you for this great reply :grinning:
I will watch and learn  :+1:

And here is the log

Yeah he is what got me into CachyOS. Maybe something in those videos will be a light bulb moment and lead to you solving the problem. If not let me know and we can go hunting for more answers.

I deleted my last post because I asked you a questions that I answered myself and it turned out to be irrelevant.

I know this isnā€™t helpful in solving the problem (though Iā€™ll monitor and see if I can add anything), but I also do want to say that performance in Linux on most titles has been similar if not superior to Windows. I will admit there are a few newer games that Iā€™ve preferred to play on Windows because GPU acceleration under commercial drivers were better. Thatā€™s usually a transitory thing thoughā€¦and say six months after release, things are better on Linux (imo).

Iā€™m not a hardcore gamer but so far every game I have played on Linux runs better than it did on Windows. Also the temps donā€™t get as high. When switching to CachyOS from Mint I got a decent FPS boost but for some reason also a pretty large drop in temps again. Thatā€™s why Iā€™d like to figure this out because he pretty much has the same specs as me but is having frames that low on CS2 of all things. lol Something is definitely off.

In the last days i watched A1RM4X and then i did some changed but fps were still around 25. Nothing changed with tweaking. Then i installed Mint and CS2. Without customization i started the game and i got 200 FPS  But i want cachy on my pc, so i tried again.
I installed only gaming packages, but i was again on 25 FPSā€¦

Now i donā€™t know was is the issue? Need some old kernel (6.8 on mint) to run this or what :grinning:

try to check that vsync is off
