2. RAM & Swap Management (Zram Optimization)

You have 16GB of RAM and a ~15GB Swap partition. On a fast Linux system, traditional disk swap can bottleneck you if the system starts paging.

If your swap is on the SSD, we want to minimize its use, or better yet, shift to zram (compressed RAM swap) which CachyOS handles brilliantly.

Check if zram is running:

If it is, you can safely turn down your system’s eagerness to swap to the physical disk by creating an optimal sysctl configuration.

Create or edit /etc/sysctl.d/99-swappiness.conf:

• vm.swappiness = 10: Tells the kernel to strictly prefer physical RAM over swap until absolutely necessary.
• vm.vfs_cache_pressure = 50: Keeps filesystem structures (inodes/dentries) in RAM longer, making file browsing and loading snappier.

What is the rationale here?

Cachy uses ZRAM by default.

And these swappiness values are bad for zram and performance.

3. Kernel & Scheduler Tuning

You are on the standard cachyos kernel (currently 7.0.5), which defaults to the BORE (Burst-Oriented Response Enhancer) scheduler. This is already excellent for desktop snappiness. However, you can fine-tune how it handles workloads.

I am a bit confused about BORE

So I think there has been some mixup. And it seems to have been this way for a while. But despite what the subtext claims there does not appear to be any BORE on the default kernel. sysctl kernel.sched_bore zgrep "CONFIG_SCHED_" /proc/config.gz There were some other threads going over this too I thought..

CPU Governor

Because you are on a laptop (i7-1065G7), the intel_pstate driver manages your CPU scaling. Ensure it’s favoring performance when plugged in.

• Open the CachyOS Package Installer or use the terminal to ensure power-profiles-daemon or tlp is installed.
• Under KDE Plasma’s power settings, set the profile to Performance when on AC power to let the CPU boost aggressively.

PPD is probably not the most performant choice - it certainly gives few options.

While if you are using TLP then those Plasma power settings do not exist.
