Hello, it's Tim from Germany!

Hi, I’m Tim and I’d like to say a very heartfelt “Thank you!” to the team on CachyOS. I’m using it for about 6 months now and it works just without any pain.

I’m using my desktop for all kinds of stuff including gaming, printing, 3D printing, CAD, coding, photo editing and I’m playing around with AIs, using Ollama as well as InvokeAI for pictures. It’s an i9-13900K on an Asus B760-F board with 64GB RAM running on 6400Mhz and an Nvidia RTX 4090 (Asus Strix). All three M2 slots are occupied with a 990 Pro. 2023, that was a setup of the kind that you buy once every 10 years and I’d call it my dream machine at that time (not knowing about CPU degrading and melting High Power adapters on graphic cards, oh well).

However, in late 2023, I was fed up by Windows as it frequently gave me trouble, so I turned to Linux and despite missing some software like all products from Serif, I never turned back to Windows again and nope, not even in a virtual machine

I ended up with CachyOS since I don’t want to have trouble updating to a newer LTS version every two years, enjoying a rolling release much more. Plus, most of the software I need just works! Of course, gaming is always fiddly but eventually, I’m getting all the games running that I care of.

So yeah, many thanks a lot for this distro! I’m paying some money on a monthly subscription, hope it helps keeping this distro up

Welcome Tim! The forums here are good for asking compatibility questions, if you get stuck.

What are you using for CAD?

I’m keeping Windows around just for Solidworks. Their 3D / Maker package is stupid cheap and the software is great. Going to try to see if I can get it working here but I don’t have high hopes.

Hm I’m just using Blender with CAD Sketcher and FreeCAD for my 3D printing ideas, but I’m just on a beginner level and I never was into real “CAD” anyways. From what I’ve heard so far, there seem to be no real good intuitive and hassle-free CAD software for a) Linux that is b) free to use and c) doesn’t rely on any cloud service. FreeCAD seems to be quite obvious, but that’s why I wrote “hassle-free”: I tried using 1.0 for a while now but I always end up being frustrated. Wouldn’t keep me from trying, though.
